Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Reckoning

Forty-eight hours later, Jane stood inside Marco Duca's expansive private office once more, wearing a brand-new, impeccably tailored cashmere sweater and dark trousers provided by his household staff. Her physical injuries were already beginning to heal under proper medical care, but the transformation in her posture was even more striking—she stood tall, her shoulders back, her chin held high with newfound dignity.
Marco sat behind his mahogany desk, casually flipping open a thick manila folder filled with financial documents, bank records, and legal affidavits.
"Well, Jane," Marco looked up, his smoky eyes assessing her steady demeanor. "It has been forty-eight hours. The physician cleared you physically, and my legal team has fully verified every single detail of your mother's insurance fraud and abuse history. The question remains: Do you want to live?"
"Yes," Jane answered instantly, her voice clear, strong, and completely devoid of hesitation. "I want to live. And more than that, I want justice."
A slow, approving smile finally broke across Marco's striking face, transforming his intimidating aura into something altogether captivating. "Good. Because your mother is currently under the impression that her elaborate insurance payout is moments away from clearing."
An hour later, a sleek black SUV delivered a terrified and utterly bewildered Mrs. Whitmore directly to the front gates of the Duca compound, under the strict pretense that she was meeting an associate to finalize the collection of her payout. When she was aggressively escorted into the grand study, expecting to find a blood-soaked murder scene, she instead froze in absolute horror upon seeing her daughter—alive, healthy, and impeccably dressed—standing calmly beside Marco Duca.
"Jane?! How—what is the meaning of this?!" her mother shrieked, her practiced mask of maternal grief instantly shattering into naked panic as she realized her entire two-million-dollar scam had utterly collapsed. "You—you were supposed to—"
"Quiet," Marco commanded, his voice dropping to a lethal register that instantly silenced the older woman's frantic stammering. He casually slid the thick manila folder containing the signed confessions, bank fraud evidence, and insurance conspiracy wiretaps across the polished mahogany desk right toward her trembling hands.
"Your daughter no longer belongs to you, Mrs. Whitmore," Marco stated coldly, rising to his full height and towering over the trembling woman. "In fact, your entire estate, your fraudulent policies, and every illicit asset you possess have just been legally transferred over to Jane's exclusive ownership as baseline restitution for twenty-six years of systematic abuse and attempted murder."
Before the woman could even gasp out a defense, two massive enforcers stepped forward, grabbing her by the elbows to escort her out into the pouring rain to face federal prosecutors and the full, merciless wrath of the Duca syndicate's financial auditors.
As the heavy oak door clicked shut behind her mother, sealing away her toxic past forever, Jane let out a long, ragged breath that felt like shedding a heavy winter coat after years in a blizzard. She turned slowly to look at the powerful mafia boss who had rewritten her entire destiny.

"Thank you, Marco," she whispered softly, a genuine, beautiful smile finally gracing her lips for the first time in memory.
Marco walked around the desk, stopping just inches away, his gray eyes softening warmly as he offered her a hand that promised absolute protection and a brand-new beginning. "Welcome to your new life, Jane. Let's see what you do with it."
