Chapter 4 - A Dangerous Proposal

The profound question struck Jane square in the chest with the physical force of a heavy blow. In all twenty-six years of her miserable existence, not a single human being had ever bothered to ask her that fundamental question. She had always been ordered what to do, told where to walk, and heavily dictated on how to behave. Molded, manipulated, controlled, and physically beaten into total compliance. Yet here, standing in the inner sanctum of Chicago's most feared criminal mastermind, someone was finally offering her a choice.
"I—I honestly don't know," her voice cracked, fresh tears spilling over her bruised cheeks. "I've never been allowed to think about a future."
"That is the most honest answer you could have possibly given me," Marco replied softly, his hard demeanor softening by a fraction.
He strode back across the plush rug, leaning his hips casually against the front of his mahogany desk while crossing his strong arms over his chest. "Here is precisely what is going to happen next, Jane. You are going to stay right here in this secure compound tonight. My private household physician is already on his way up to evaluate those injuries, clean those cuts, and make sure your ribs aren't severely fractured. You are going to eat a hot meal, sleep in a clean bed, and let your body rest. Tomorrow morning, once you've had a chance to process everything with a clear mind, I am going to ask you that exact same question again. And if your answer is affirmative—if you truly decide that you want to live and take back your life—then you and I are going to sit down and figure out how to dismantle your mother's schemes together."
"Why?" The desperate question burst out of her lips before she could censor herself. "Why would you ever help a complete stranger like me? You don't know me from anyone. I'm a nobody, a debt payment."
"You are a resilient young woman who walked willingly into a literal death trap with her eyes wide open simply because she refused to accept any further degradation. That displays a rare kind of raw courage most people twice your age lack entirely," Marco said, his piercing gray eyes holding hers effortlessly. "Besides that, your mother made a catastrophic error in judgment by assuming she could easily manipulate me into acting as her personal executioner. I despise being used as a pawn in anyone's game. So consider my intervention tonight a professional courtesy—and a deeply personal insult that I fully intend to repay in full."
Jane's bruised hands began shaking again, but this time, the tremor had nothing to do with fear or cold. It was an entirely different sensation—a foreign, overwhelming emotion that felt terrifying precisely because she had never experienced it before.

Hope.
True to his word, within twenty minutes, an older, discreet family doctor arrived, quietly stitching her split lip, bandaging her ribs, and providing proper pain medication without asking invasive questions or notifying local authorities. Jane was then escorted down a secure private hallway to a luxurious guest suite featuring crisp white linens, a steaming hot marble shower, and a tray of nourishing food waiting on a bedside table. For the first time in her entire life, she locked a door behind her knowing that nobody could break it down to hurt her.
