Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

I walked slowly toward them, the soft click of my heels against the marble sounding like a countdown timer.

"Surprised to see me, Nathan?" I asked, my voice smooth, sweet, and entirely devoid of fear. "You told the judge I had nothing. You told me I wouldn't survive a week without your dirty money."

Nathan swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he tried to regain a shred of his arrogant composure. "You... you’re running a scam. This is identity fraud! You're a foster kid from a broken background, you have no family, no money—!"

"Correction, Nathan," a crisp, cold voice cut across the room.

Thomas Vance, our chief legal counsel, stepped forward holding a thick stack of embossed legal folios. He opened the top folder and began reading aloud to the stunned crowd of elites.

"As of 8:00 PM this evening, Vance Global Holdings has executed a total hostile takeover and debt-acceleration call on Caldwell Enterprises. Every single commercial loan, line of credit, and venture capital asset backing Mr. Caldwell’s firm has been instantly frozen due to catastrophic financial insolvency and corporate fraud."

Gasps erupted around the room. Several high-profile investors clutched their chests, realizing in horror that their money had just vanished into a bottomless legal pit.

"That's impossible!" Nathan shrieked, lunging forward before his security guards grabbed him by the shoulders. "You can't do that! We have contracts! We have a multi-million-dollar real estate deal closing on Monday!"

"Not anymore," I smiled softly, stepping right up to him. "You wanted all the assets, Nathan. You wanted the house, the business, the bank accounts. Well, congratulations. You now own one hundred percent of Caldwell Enterprises' mounting debts, federal tax audits, and impending bankruptcy proceedings."

Lauren’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. She shoved Nathan backward, her voice shrill with hysteria. "You idiot! You said she was broke! You said she was a nobody with zero connections!"

"She lied!" Nathan screamed, pointing a shaking finger at me, his manicured facade completely shattered. "She's a gold-digger! She trapped me!"

"No, Nathan," I said, my voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "I simply let you build your own gallows."

Arthur placed a heavy, protective hand on my shoulder, looking down at my shaking ex-husband with utter disdain. "Mr. Caldwell, my legal team will be filing criminal charges for corporate embezzlement and spousal asset concealment by first light tomorrow. You are entirely, irrevocably ruined."
