Chapter 3 - The Golden Trap

The heavy double doors of Suite 901 blew open with a violent crash that rattled the soundproofing panels on the walls.

Travis Thorne stormed into the private recovery suite, his face flushed red, his chest heaving, clutching his smartphone in his right hand as if it were a winning lottery ticket. Martha trailed closely behind him, her expression a mix of haughty irritation and sudden, jarring confusion as her eyes swept over the magnificent expanse of the private penthouse suite.

There were no plastic chairs here. No crowded, desperate wards smelling of antiseptic and fear. The walls were finished in rich walnut veneer; the flooring was custom herringbone oak covered by silk-blend Persian rugs. A dedicated gold-embedded scanner panel blinked steadily beside the door, and specialized medical monitors hummed with quiet, expensive precision.

Travis stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes darted from the private wet bar to the state-of-the-art neonatal incubator standing empty in the corner, and finally landed on the hospital bed where I lay recovering, pale, exhausted, and hooked up to a tangle of intravenous lines.

Greed and arrogance warred across his face, instantly obliterating any semblance of human concern for his wife or his newborn children.

"You little con artist!" Travis bellowed, crossing the room in three long strides. He didn't ask how the babies were. He didn't check if I was breathing. Instead, he shoved his glowing smartphone screen directly into my face, his fingers trembling with rage. "Look at this! Vance Estates just authorized a hundred thousand dollar wire to my personal ledger! You’ve been hiding money this whole time! You've been lying to me about your family!"

I didn't flinch. I slowly turned my head away from the monitor, my eyes locking onto his with a cold, terrifying stillness that made him stutter for a fraction of a second.

"You locked me in the house, Travis," I whispered, my voice hoarse from screaming during labor. "While I was in active labor with your children. You stepped over my body."

"Shut up!" he roared, his face contorting into an ugly snarl. "You staged this whole pathetic melodrama just to steal from my business accounts and trap me with hospital bills! I’m the head of this household, and every cent you have belongs to—"

Before I could finish my sentence, Travis lost control entirely. Blinded by fury at the thought that I might possess more wealth than his fragile ego could handle, he raised his hand, gripped a fistful of my damp hair, and yanked my head violently sideways.

"How dare you waste my money!" he shouted, pulling back his other fist, preparing to drive it straight down into my stomach.

He never got the chance.

David moved with the terrifying speed of a trained operative. Before Travis’s knuckles could complete their descent, David crossed the room, grabbed Travis’s wrist in a bone-crushing grip, and twisted his arm upward with a sharp, sickening pop.

Travis shrieked in agony, dropping his phone as David swept his legs out from under him, slamming him hard onto the imported Persian rug.

"Touch her again," David said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal register that echoed off the walnut walls, "and you won't leave this room walking."

Martha screamed, clutching her pearls as she rushed forward. "Security! Police! Assault! My son is being attacked by a common thug in a hospital room! Arrest them both!"

"Shut your mouth, Martha," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the doorway.

The room went instantly, chillingly silent. Every head turned toward the private elevator. The doors slid open to reveal a tall, silver-haired man wearing an immaculate charcoal suit. His posture was ramrod straight, his eyes sharp as broken glass, and his presence alone sucked all the oxygen out of the room.

It was Walter Vance.
