Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Server Room

The basement of the Sterling mansion was dark, cool, and humming with the low-frequency vibrations of massive data servers. Elena’s fingers danced across her portable bypass terminal, her breath catching in her throat as the security interface loaded onto her screen.

She navigated to the date and timestamp of the incident. The exterior patio camera—Camera 04—was the holy grail. It captured every square inch of the pool deck. Elena hit play.
The footage on the screen made her blood run ice-cold.
There, clear as day, was Vanessa Brooks creeping out onto the patio three minutes before the stroller moved. Vanessa wasn't drinking coffee; she was checking her watch, glancing toward the kitchen, and then—with a cold, calculated smirk—walking up to the stroller and deliberately releasing the safety latch, giving it a sharp shove toward the water’s edge.
Right after the push, Vanessa had sprinted back inside, waiting for Elena to run out before staging her fake hysteria.
“I’ve got you,” Elena whispered, tears of vindication stinging her eyes as she downloaded the raw, unedited footage to an encrypted flash drive.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the server room clicked open.
“Well, well, well. Look what the stray cat dragged in,” a smooth, chillingly calm voice echoed through the dark room.
Elena spun around. Standing in the doorway was Vanessa Brooks, holding a heavy brass paperweight in one hand and flashing a sinister, triumphant smile. Behind Vanessa stood two burly private enforcers in black suits.
“You really thought a filthy, penniless maid could outsmart me, Elena?” Vanessa sneered, stepping closer. “Delete that file right now, or you won't leave this basement alive. Marcus believes every word I say. No one will ever look for a girl who vanished off the streets.”
Elena gripped the flash drive tightly in her pocket, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She didn't flinch. Instead, she looked Vanessa dead in the eye and smiled.
“You’re too late, Vanessa,” Elena said coolly. “The file was uploaded to federal cloud servers the second my decryption cracked. If anything happens to me right now, the D.A.’s office and Marcus Sterling receive the unedited murder-attempt footage within sixty seconds.”

Vanessa’s smug expression vanished, replaced by sudden, panicked fury. She lunged forward, raising the heavy paperweight to strike.
