Chapter 1 - The Plunge and the Poisonous Lie

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the pristine limestone patio of the Sterling estate, glittering blindingly across the surface of the infinity pool. Elena Vance gripped the handle of the stroller, her mind drifting to her ailing mother’s mounting medical bills—bills she desperately needed her weekly wages as a housemaid to cover. Just a foot away from the water’s edge, a sudden gust of wind swept across the terrace. The stroller’s safety brake, worn and neglected, gave way with a sharp snap.
Before Elena could scream, the stroller rolled forward, plunging directly into the deep end of the pool.
Elena did not hesitate. Dropping her cleaning supplies, she sprinted across the patio, kicked off her heavy work shoes, and dove headfirst into the chlorine-filled water. The cold shock gripped her chest, but adrenaline fueled her movements. She swam downward, grabbing the struggling infant from the submerged stroller, unbuckling the safety harness with frantic fingers, and breaking back up to the surface. Gasping for air, she heaved the crying baby over the pool ledge and hauled herself up beside him.
“I saved him!” Elena cried out, her voice trembling as she cradled the shivering, coughing child against her chest.
Heavy, panicked footsteps echoed from the glass sliding doors of the mansion. Marcus Sterling, the billionaire tech mogul and doting father, rushed onto the patio, his face pale with raw terror. But before Elena could even explain what happened, Vanessa Brooks—Marcus’s polished, social-climbing fiancée, draped in an expensive emerald dress—darted past him.
Vanessa pointed a manicured finger directly at Elena’s soaked, shivering form.
“Marcus, thank God you’re here!” Vanessa shrieked, theatrical tears instantly welling in her eyes. “She pushed him in! I saw the whole thing from the kitchen window! She got angry when you reprimanded her earlier, and she pushed the stroller right into the water!”
Elena froze, water dripping from her hair, her eyes wide with shock. “What? No! Are you insane? I just dove in to save him—”

“Shut up, you ungrateful thief!” Marcus roared, his face contorting into a mask of blind, terrifying rage. Without listening to another word, he snatched his crying son from Elena’s arms and glared down at her with pure, venomous hatred. “Get out of my house before I have you thrown in prison for attempted murder.”
