Chapter 3 - Returning to the Gates

The taxi ride back to the Christopher estate felt like traveling through a ghost world. As the vehicle turned up the long, winding gravel driveway flanked by towering ancient oaks, the magnificent stone mansion loomed ahead under the gray twilight sky. For eighteen years, I had entered through the side service doors, carrying mops, buckets, and groceries. Today, the instructions from Samuel were entirely different.
When the taxi stopped near the grand double front doors, I saw Samuel waiting on the stone steps, clutching a heavy leather briefcase. Next to him stood two local police officers and a junior clerk from the county probate court. Through the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows of the formal parlor, I could see Justin. He was shouting angrily at a pair of commercial real estate brokers, gesturing wildly as if he already owned the sky above the property.
As I stepped out of the cab, Samuel hurried down the steps, his face etched with grim determination. "Helena. Thank God you made it in time. He’s already signing preliminary asset-stripping contracts with liquidators."
"Mr. Samuel, I don't understand," I said, my voice trembling as I clutched my worn purse. "Why would Mr. Christopher leave all of this to a maid? Justin is his blood son. Won't the courts throw this out?"
"Not under these specific conditions," Samuel explained quickly, guiding me past the stone pillars. "Mr. Christopher loved his son, but he also knew Justin's character. Justin has spent the last ten years running up massive gambling debts and treating people like disposable trash. Mr. Christopher added a strict moral codicil to the final trust document. He stipulated that if the primary heir ever abused, wrongfully terminated, or publicly humiliated the estate's most senior and loyal employee within thirty days of his passing, the entire estate would instantly forfeit to that employee as punitive restitution."

Samuel paused, looking directly into my eyes with profound respect. "When Justin fired you without cause, gave you a insulting week's severance, and threw you out like garbage, he unknowingly signed away his entire inheritance. You didn't just lose a job, Helena. You triggered the ultimate legal trap."
Before I could fully process the earth-shattering weight of his words, the heavy front door swung open, and Justin stepped out onto the porch, a scowl carved deep into his arrogant face.
