Chapter 4 - The Symphony of Notifications**

*Bzzz. Ping. Chime.*

It started as a jagged, disjointed rhythm and quickly escalated into a synchronized digital orchestra that filled the living room.

My father frowned, pulling his phone out of his breast pocket with his free hand. My mother’s smile faltered as her phone screen lit up her palm with amber alert lights. Kayla pulled her phone out of her small clutch bag, her brow furrowing in irritation.

“What on earth is that?” my uncle muttered, staring down at his screen.

“Alert from the joint family credit union,” my father said, squinting through his reading glasses at the notification banner. He tapped his screen, swiping impatiently. “Must be a system glitch—wait. What does this mean?”

My mother’s face instantly drained of all its carefully applied makeup color. She stared at her phone as if it had turned into a venomous spider. Her hands began to visibly shake.

“Bob... Bob, look at your screen,” she whispered, her voice cracking with sudden, rising panic. “Look at the checking account balance right now.”

My father tapped the app icon again, logging into the primary family portal. I watched calmly from across the room as the arrogant color drained straight out of his cheeks, leaving him looking like a man who had just been struck across the face with a lead pipe.

“Zero dollars,” my father breathed, his voice dropping into a horrified rasp. “The... the balance is zero. Every single checking, savings, and reserve account attached to our household ID has been completely wiped clean.”

The room plunged into absolute, chaotic pandemonium.

“What do you mean zero?!” my aunt shrieked, dropping her wine glass onto the plush carpet with a loud, sickening smash. “My vacation deposit! My daughter’s college fund transfer was supposed to clear today!”

“Mine too!” shouted my cousin, frantically tapping his banking app. “Declined! All my cards are declining!”

Kayla stared down at her phone screen, her face turning a sickly, pale grey under the turquoise balloons. She looked up slowly, her eyes wide with terror, fixing her gaze directly on me.

“Natalie... what did you do?” she whimpered, her voice trembling. “My Hawaii tickets! The travel agency said the primary deposit bounced back rejected an hour ago! They’re canceling our reservations right now!”

I didn't flinch. I kept my hands folded neatly in front of me, leaning back against the edge of the buffet table right beside my untouched chocolate birthday cake.

“You didn't think I’d fund your permanent vacation forever, did you, Kayla?” I asked softly, my voice cutting cleanly through the frantic shouting of my relatives.

My father lunged forward, slamming his palm onto the dining table, his face mottled a furious, terrifying crimson.

“You little ungrateful thief!” he roared, pointing a trembling finger straight at my face. “You locked us out of our own accounts?! Put the money back right this instant or I swear to God I will call the police and have you arrested for grand larceny!”
