Chapter 3 - The Smiling Accomplice**

My father raised his glass of scotch, his eyes finally scanning the room and landing on me for the first time all evening. His expression wasn't welcoming; it was faintly annoyed, as if my silence was dampening the festive mood.

“Natalie,” he called out, his voice sharp across the coffee table. “Aren't you going to raise a glass and congratulate your sister on her incredible news?”

The entire room shifted in unison. Fourteen pairs of eyes turned away from Kayla and locked onto me.

Kayla looked over with a soft, patronizing, expectant smile, waiting for me to bow and scrape as I always had.

For years, this exact moment was where my conditioning would have taken over. I would have folded inward. I would have offered a tight, polite smile, forced out a hollow congratulation, driven home alone, cried into my pillow, and convinced myself that keeping family peace mattered infinitely more than my own self-respect.

My thumb moved deliberately across the banking app interface beneath the table.

I looked around the living room one last time—at the turquoise balloons, the ridiculous flower crown, the shiny travel envelope, and my forgotten birthday cake sitting unboxed on the side table.

Then, my finger pressed firmly against the screen.

For one heartbeat, absolutely nothing happened in the room. The silence stretched thin and brittle.

Then, every single smartphone sitting on the dining table, resting in pockets, and clutched in hands around the room began to buzz, chime, and ring simultaneously.
