Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Sun

San Diego welcomed us back with a brilliant, golden sunset that painted the Pacific Ocean in shades of crimson and violet. The family estate—the very place where my disastrous engagement party was supposed to take place just days earlier—now felt entirely transformed. The suffocating formality of the sprawling mansion had been replaced by the sound of small footsteps echoing across the marble foyer and the bright, infectious laughter of four boys chasing a golden retriever across the manicured lawn.

Kelsey and I stood on the wide stone terrace overlooking the bay, a gentle evening breeze carrying the scent of salt water and blooming jasmine.

"Are you sure about this?" Kelsey asked softly, wrapping her arms around her waist as she watched the boys play near the infinity pool. "Moving back into this house... doesn't it hold too many ghosts?"

"This house was built on secrets and glass walls," I said, stepping closer to her, resting my hands on the stone railing beside hers. "We're tearing down the walls, Kelsey. Starting tomorrow, we remodel every room. No more hiding. No more lies."

She turned her head, looking up at me with those unmistakable hazel eyes. The defensive barrier that had guarded her heart for six years was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, fierce warmth.

"I still can't believe it's real," she murmured. "For six years, I dreamed of what our lives would have looked like if that car accident hadn't happened, if your mother hadn't torn us apart. I thought I was living the rest of my life as a ghost."

"You weren't a ghost," I said, reaching out to gently trace the tiny scar above her eyebrow—the same one I used to kiss when we were college students believing the world belonged to us. "You were just waiting out the storm. And I promise you, Kelsey, from this moment on, you will never have to fight alone again."

She leaned into my touch, her breath hitching slightly as I pulled her closer against my chest. Far down the lawn, Cormac suddenly stopped chasing the dog and shouted toward the terrace.

"Dad! Mom! Callan fell in the bushes!"

Kelsey laughed, a bright, beautiful sound that washed away the last lingering shadows of the past, and took my hand as we ran down the stone steps together toward our sons.
