Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Serpent

The grand library of the Moretti estate looked like a war room by 2:00 AM. The mahogany tables were littered with printouts of encrypted financial transfers, internal communications logs, and personnel files. Victor Hale sat handcuffed in a leather armchair near the fireplace, his professional composure completely shattered. The guards who had backed him blindly hours ago now stood rigidly against the walls, realizing the depth of the corruption they had inadvertently protected.

Elena sat quietly in a corner armchair, a cup of strong black tea warming her hands, while Nero lay across her feet like a living rug. Dante stood by the massive stone hearth, turning the recovered flash drive over in his hand before tossing it onto the table in front of Victor.

"You built an empire within my empire, Victor," Dante said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You used the handlers to test Nero's breaking point, deliberately driving him insane with modified collars so he would be condemned as vicious and put down. That way, nobody would look twice when you cleared out the west wing security logs to transfer our shipping manifests to the Vance Group."

Victor laughed bitterly, a harsh, defeated sound. "You think you’re untouchable, Dante. You sit in this mausoleum and play lord of the manor while the world changes around you. I built your security grid. Without me, you're just a rich target."

"Without you, I have an estate that actually functions without tearing itself apart from the inside," Dante retorted sharply. He turned his gaze toward Elena, softening his tone just enough to break the oppressive tension in the room. "And I have someone who looks at the details instead of the titles."

Victor’s eyes darted toward Elena with pure venom. "You’re trusting a domestic? A plus-size housekeeper you didn't even know the last name of twenty-four hours ago?"

"She knew my dog was in pain when your entire tactical team called him a monster," Dante replied, stepping over to stand directly behind Elena’s chair. He placed a hand lightly on the back of the leather seat—a protective, possessive gesture that left no doubt where her standing was now. "That makes her more qualified to run this estate than you ever were."

The federal agents, summoned via secure encrypted channels by Dante’s private legal team, arrived precisely at 3:00 AM. They didn't knock; they flooded the grand foyer, sweeping through the mansion with federal warrants that dismantled Victor’s entire operation in a matter of minutes. As Victor was led away in zip-ties, casting one final, venomous glare toward the service wing, the heavy oak front doors closed behind him, sealing away years of rot and betrayal.

Silence settled back over the grand library, heavy and profound. The storm had broken, leaving the estate washed clean of its deepest deceit. Dante walked over to the sideboard, poured two glasses of aged bourbon, and brought one over to Elena.

"I believe," Dante said quietly, holding out the crystal glass, "we owe you a formal apology for eight months of administrative neglect."

Elena took the glass, her fingers brushing against his once more. This time, there was no blood, no chaos—only the quiet hum of a new reality taking root in the heart of the Moretti dynasty.
