Chapter 2 - Whispers Behind Closed Doors

The service wing of the Moretti estate smelled of damp brick and old floor wax, a stark contrast to the crystal-chandeliered opulence of the main foyer. Elena worked methodically, smoothing crisp white sheets over a guest bed, but her mind was tangled in the courtyard incident. Nero remained stationed outside her door like a massive, breathing anchor, his heavy head resting on his paws whenever she moved across the room. He refused to return to the security kennel, and surprisingly, Dante had countermanded Victor’s protests, allowing the dog to stay within Elena’s orbit.
By mid-afternoon, the tension in the mansion had reached a boiling point. Victor Hale was holding an unscheduled briefing in the lower security office, and Elena, scrubbing down the marble counters in the pantry, could hear the muffled, angry arguments through the thick oak service door. Victor was furious, not just because his security team had been publicly humiliated by a housekeeper, but because the investigation into the modified collar was pointing inward.
The rivets used to alter the leather weren't standard issue. They were custom-forged, matching the micro-hardware used in the estate's high-tech armory and private maintenance bays—areas restricted strictly to senior security staff and select contractors. Someone inside Victor’s own inner circle had sabotaged the dog.
A shadow fell across the pantry threshold. Elena looked up to find Dante Moretti leaning against the doorframe, his suit jacket discarded, his shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle. He didn’t look like a distant, untouchable titan in that moment; he looked like a man standing amid wreckage, trying to find the foundation.
"Nero is eating," Dante said quietly, his voice dropping into that smooth, gravelly register that commanded immediate silence. "He hasn't let the kennel master within ten feet of him all day. But he let you refill his water bowl."
Elena rinsed her cloth and wrung it out, keeping her movements measured. "Animals understand intent, Mr. Moretti. Nero knew the difference between someone trying to manage him and someone trying to hurt him."
Dante stepped fully into the small room, closing the distance between them. "Victor wants to sweep this under the rug. He claims it was an isolated incident by a disgruntled former handler who left last week. He says the case is closed."
Elena met his gaze directly, her dark eyes flashing with sharp intelligence. "And do you believe him?"
A slow, humorless smile touched the corners of Dante’s mouth. "If I believed everything Victor Hale told me, I’d still think my dog was rabid. Victor runs security like a fortress, but a fortress is only as strong as the people guarding the gates." He paused, his gaze dropping briefly to the blood-stained apron hanging over a nearby chair before returning to her face. "You’ve worked here eight months, Elena. You keep your head down, you do your job flawlessly, and you notice things others step right over. Why?"
"Because when you grow up invisible, Mr. Moretti, you learn to watch everyone else so you don't get caught in their crossfire," she replied without missing a beat, her voice steady and unapologetic.
Dante didn’t look away. Instead, he reached into his pocket and placed a small, heavy object on the marble counter between them—a second modified rivet, identical to the one found on Nero’s collar, recovered from the master security locker. "Someone planted that in the armory to frame the departed handler. It’s a clean setup. Too clean." He leaned in closer, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial murmur. "I need someone in this house who isn't tied to the payroll politics. I need eyes that see everything, but belong to no one."

Elena stared at the metal piece, knowing that by accepting his premise, she was stepping off the sidelines and directly into the crosshairs of a dangerous corporate war. But as she thought of the blood on her fingers that morning, her resolve hardened. "If I help you look, Mr. Moretti, I look where I want, not where Victor tells me to."
Dante looked at her for a long, calculating second, then slowly nodded. "Deal."
