Chapter 3 - The Cold Patriarch and the Blueprint of Trust

Three months into the contract, the dynamic within the Moretti household had shifted in ways neither Luca nor Nora could have ever anticipated. The cold, sterile penthouse was now occasionally filled with the sound of crayons rattling across coffee tables, the smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, and the soft echo of a child's laughter bouncing off the marble pillars.

Yet, tension still crackled fiercely every time Luca entered the room.

It was late Friday evening. Nora sat at the massive marble kitchen island reviewing structural sketches for an independent interior design portfolio she had quietly started to rebuild her professional life. Her hair was pulled back in a loose clip, her reading glasses sliding down her nose, completely engrossed in her work.

Heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the floor. Luca walked into the kitchen, loosening his silk tie, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his muscular forearms. He poured two fingers of amber scotch into a crystal glass and leaned against the counter opposite her, his silver eyes fixed intently on her face.

"Leo spoke three full sentences at breakfast this morning," Luca said, his voice deep and resonant. "He asked for pancakes with extra blueberries. He hasn't asked for anything since the accident."

Nora looked up over her glasses, her expression cool and composed. "Children respond to consistency, Mr. Moretti. Not corporate efficiency or intimidation tactics."

Luca pushed off the counter, walking closer until he stood on the other side of the island, towering over her. "You've completely transformed my home in twelve weeks, Nora. The board is thrilled with our public appearances as the 'happily married Morettis.' But I didn't bring you here just to be a permanent fixture in a PR campaign."

"Then why did you?" Nora challenged, her dark eyes flashing with sudden defiance. She stood up from her stool, refusing to shrink under his intense gaze. "Are you worried I'm getting too comfortable? Or are you afraid that Leo loves spending time with me more than his own distant, workaholic father?"

The words hung in the suffocating air between them like razor blades.

Luca flinched. A flicker of genuine pain crossed his harsh features, quickly masked by his usual icy armor. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until Nora could feel the heat radiating off his chest and smell the faint scent of sandalwood and expensive bourbon.

"I'm afraid," Luca whispered, his voice dropping an octave, losing all its corporate coldness, "that one year will end, and you'll realize you deserve far better than a broken man who only knows how to build walls."

Nora’s breath hitched. For a second, the air left the room. She looked up into his silver eyes and saw no tyranny there—only a profound, aching loneliness that mirrored the exact emptiness she had carried inside her own soul since Richard’s betrayal.

Before either of them could pull away, a sleepy voice echoed from the hallway.

"Nora? Daddy?"

They broke apart instantly. Leo stood rubbing his eyes in the doorway, clutching his stuffed dragon. Nora rushed over, lifting him effortlessly into her arms, while Luca stood silently by the counter, watching them with a gaze full of unexpressed longing.
