Chapter 1 - The Rain-Soaked Alley and the Billionaire’s Cold Proposition

The neon lights of Manhattan’s Upper East Side bled into the slick, wet pavement as the rain lashed down with a cruel, unrelenting fury. Nora Vance stood shivering beneath the metal awning of a high-end designer boutique, clutching a cardboard box filled with her meager personal belongings. Only an hour earlier, her husband of three years, Richard, had casually handed her divorce papers across a mahogany restaurant table while looking her dead in the eye with utter disgust.

"Let’s be honest, Nora," Richard had sneered, adjusting his expensive Swiss watch. "You let yourself go. Your skin is dull, your clothes are out of style, and a rising junior partner at my firm needs a trophy wife who looks like she stepped off a magazine cover—not a frumpy housewife who smells like instant coffee and laundry detergent. I'm filing for abandonment and asset forfeiture. You get nothing."

He had stripped her of her savings, thrown her out of their luxury penthouse, and left her with a shattered heart and zero hope. Her looks, her youth, her entire self-worth had been weighed on a scale and found worthless by the man she had sacrificed her own career to support.

As Nora stared down at her reflection in the dark puddle by the curb, tears mixing with the rain, a massive, obsidian-black Maybach pulled up silently beside her.

The tinted rear window rolled down with a soft whir, revealing a man carved from ice, expensive marble, and pure, terrifying danger. Luca Moretti. The underworld king, the ruthless billionaire real estate tycoon, and the most feared mafia Don in the tri-state area. His sharp jawline, raven-dark hair, and piercing silver-gray eyes commanded instant absolute terror. Rumor had it that Luca’s heart had turned to stone after his wife’s tragic death two years prior, leaving him an isolated, broken widower unable to reach his traumatized five-year-old son, Leo.

"Nora Vance?" Luca’s voice was a low, gravelly baritone that cut cleanly through the howling wind.

Nora stiffened, her jaw clenching as she clutched her cardboard box like a shield. "Who’s asking?"

"Get in the car," Luca commanded, his tone leaving zero room for argument. "Your ex-husband’s assets are currently being frozen by my corporate legal division. In exchange, you are going to save my son."

Nora stared at him in utter disbelief. "I'm a dumped housewife, Mr. Moretti, not a nanny or a miracle worker. What kind of sick game are you playing?"

"It’s not a game," Luca said, his silver eyes flashing with a desperate vulnerability he tried hard to mask behind his cold facade. "My son, Leo, hasn’t spoken a single word since his mother died. He lives locked in a dark room, screams if anyone approaches him, and every child psychologist in New York has given up. You understand what it means to be discarded, Nora. You know how to survive. My son needs a mother who can teach him how to rebuild his shattered world. And I need a contract wife to satisfy my board of directors and give Leo a stable home."

Nora looked down at her mud-stained shoes, then up at the dark, imposing silhouette of the Moretti estate visible through the downpour. Richard had called her worthless, ugly, and incapable.

May you like

"One year," Nora whispered, her voice hardening with sudden, unyielding steel as she slid into the leather interior of the Maybach. "And on my absolute terms."
