Chapter 3 - The Mansion Viewing

Five days after the ink dried on our rapid divorce decree, the dramatic climax of Julian’s deception was set into motion.
Unknown to me initially, Julian and his mother Martha had been conspiring behind the scenes to execute a massive upward leap in their social standing. Believing that my departure meant he was now completely free and independently wealthy from his supposed startup success, Julian had decided it was time to upgrade. He had invited Martha—and his new bride-to-be, Aubrey—to tour one of the most exclusive, ultra-luxury residential estates currently on the market in the wealthy enclave north of the city.
It was a sprawling, modern-design limestone mansion featuring floor-to-ceiling glass walls, an infinity pool overlooking the valley, a private wine cellar, and a price tag of a cool $6.5 million.
Inside the sun-drenched marble foyer of the estate, Martha stood proudly, wearing a designer Chanel jacket and holding a glass of complimentary sparkling water provided by the senior real estate broker. Beside her stood Julian, wearing a custom-tailored Italian suit that made him look like a Wall Street titan, and clinging tightly to his arm was Aubrey, wearing oversized sunglasses indoors and a smug smile that could cut glass.
“Oh, Julian darling, this master bedroom suite is simply breathtaking,” Aubrey purred, running her manicured acrylic nails along the polished oak trim of the balcony doors. “I can already picture where we’ll put the king-sized velvet bed and how the morning light will hit my dressing table.”
Martha beamed with maternal pride, sipping her sparkling water as she looked down her nose at the real estate agent, a slick, impeccably groomed man named Mr. Harrington who was hanging onto their every word, envisioning a massive commission check.
“My son is a visionary, Mr. Harrington,” Martha announced loudly, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. “Stanford Tech is expanding into international markets. Buying this little estate is just a drop in the bucket for him. We aren't like ordinary people who have to scrape and save. We buy the best, immediately, no questions asked.”
Julian puffed out his chest, adjusting his cuffs with an air of arrogant superiority. He had spent the last week desperately trying to reach me about the frozen bank accounts, but after assuming it was just a temporary technical glitch or a stubborn parting shot from an angry ex-wife, he had pushed the panic aside, fully convinced his primary black card accounts would clear once he called the VIP concierge line.
“Well,” Julian said smoothly, checking his luxury Swiss watch with feigned casualness. “Why don’t we wrap this up? I have a board meeting in an hour. Let’s head down to the closing office on the main floor, run the card, and sign the deed over today. I don't want to waste time moving twice.”

Mr. Harrington’s eyes practically turned into dollar signs. He smiled broadly, bowing slightly. “Right this way, Mr. Vance. We have all the final purchase contracts prepared downstairs on the executive desk. We can process the down payment immediately.”
The small, triumphal procession marched down the grand floating staircase, full of unearned confidence, entirely unaware that the ground beneath their feet was about to give way completely.
