Chapter 4 - The Confession on Screen

The video was recorded in high definition, the lighting casting sharp shadows across Lily’s face. But it wasn't the sweet, innocent eighteen-year-old girl currently laughing with her friends out on the patio.
The girl on the screen looked older, sharper, her eyes carrying a chilling, calculating intelligence that I had never, in fifteen years, seen flicker across her face.
“Hi, Dad,” the recorded version of Lily said, her voice eerily calm, lacking any of the warmth or vulnerability she used around the house. “If you’re watching this, it means the package has been delivered, and my eighteenth birthday party is in full swing downstairs.”
I sat frozen in my chair, staring at the screen as if hypnotized by a venomous snake.
“You’ve probably figured out by now that my parents' car crash wasn't an accident,” Lily continued on the screen, leaning back casually in the chair. “You’ve probably looked at the police files, the shredded brake lines, the conspiracy. But what you don't know—what I’ve hidden from you every single day of my life since I was old enough to understand—is why I kept you safe all these years.”
She paused, offering a faint, melancholic smile that didn't reach her eyes.
“You think you adopted me out of pure chance, Dad. You think fate brought a trauma surgeon to Trauma Bay 3 on a rainy Friday night to save a dying three-year-old girl. But it wasn't chance. The Vanguard Bio-Tech syndicate didn't just want my father dead; they wanted our entire bloodline erased so the stolen billions could never be recovered. The night of the crash, the hit squad tracked our car to the interstate. When they saw the ambulance rush me into St. Jude Metropolitan Hospital with a flatline pulse, their head operative infiltrated the ER disguised as an orderly, intending to finish the job while I was on your operating table.”
My breath caught sharply in my windpipe. My mind flashed back frantically to that chaotic night fifteen years ago. I remembered a stranger in scrubs hovering near the trauma bay doors during the critical hour of surgery—someone I had impatiently barked at to get out of my sterile field.
“That man was one of their top enforcers,” Lily’s voice echoed from the laptop speakers. “He was waiting for you to fail, or waiting for a moment to disconnect my monitors. But you didn't fail. You fought like a demon for twelve hours straight. You brought me back from the dead. And the moment the hit squad realized a senior trauma surgeon had personally taken me under his wing, legally adopting me and hiding me inside an impenetrable fortress of suburban respectability... they realized they couldn't touch me without exposing themselves to federal scrutiny.”
A heavy tear slipped down my cheek, blurring the screen.
“For fifteen years, I’ve lived a double life, Dad,” Lily confessed, her voice softening slightly, filled with a deep, sorrowful affection. “You thought you were protecting a helpless orphan. But the truth is... I knew who I was by the time I was ten. I found my father’s encrypted digital ledger hidden inside the lining of the baby blanket you saved for me. For the past four years, using my own financial tech skills, I’ve been quietly hunting down the remaining syndicate executives, draining their offshore accounts, and channeling the stolen billions into those dummy accounts under your name as an insurance policy—so that if anything ever happens to me, the federal prosecutors will have undeniable proof linking the syndicate to the very house where you raised me.”
She leaned forward, staring straight through the camera lens into my soul.
“I didn't tell you because I didn't want to drag you into my war. I wanted you to stay safe. I wanted you to just be my dad. Thank you for saving me fifteen years ago, Dad. But now... it’s time for me to finish what my father started.”
The video blacked out.

The room was dead silent. I sat motionless in the dark, the weight of the screen’s confession pressing down on my chest with suffocating intensity. My sweet, innocent little girl was a tactical mastermind waging a solitary war against a multi-billion-dollar criminal syndicate.
And outside my bedroom door, downstairs on the back patio, she was currently cutting her eighteenth birthday cake.
