Chapter 4 - The Legacy of Grandfather Arthur

The silence in the dining room was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop onto the Persian rug.
Gene sat frozen, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, desperately searching for some loophole, some threat, some weapon she could use to regain control. But the cold, unyielding reality of the legal paperwork was written in black and white, signed by a federal judge and stamped with corporate seals.
“No...” Gene whispered, shaking her head frantically. “You can't do this to me. I raised you! I’m your mother! This is my home! Where am I supposed to go? What about my friends? My status in the community?!”
“You should have thought about your status in this community before you handed a seven-year-old child a drugstore candle labeled To Brandon's Girl while showering your other grandchildren with thousands of dollars,” Brandon replied coldly. “You built your entire life on the assumption that kindness is weakness, and that money gives you the right to treat human beings like disposable trash.”
He turned his head slightly, looking around the stunned, pale faces of our extended relatives seated at the table.
“And as for the rest of you,” Brandon continued, his eyes sweeping across the uncles, aunts, and cousins who had sat back and watched Gene torment Holly year after year without ever saying a single word in defense of a little girl. “Your quarterly trust distributions, your car lease payments, and your holiday allowances were all funded through the corporate dividends of Grandpa Arthur’s estate—dividends that I have personally authorized and subsidized out of my own executive salary for the last five years because I wanted to keep the family together.”
Cousin Marcus swallowed hard, his face turning a sickly shade of green. “Wait... Brandon... bro, you’re not saying...?”
“I am saying exactly that, Marcus,” Brandon confirmed without a hint of hesitation. “Effective immediately, all family stipends, trust distributions, and allowances are officially suspended pending a full forensic audit of how those funds were allocated. Furthermore, this house is no longer designated as a family residence. It is being converted immediately into a regional charitable foundation dedicated to supporting single-parent families and victims of domestic emotional abuse.”
Gene let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek of rage, leaping to her feet with surprising speed.
“You ungrateful, treacherous bastard!” she screamed, lunging across the table as if she wanted to claw her son's eyes out. “You’re throwing your own mother out onto the street for a brat who isn't even your real blood?!”
Before Gene could take another step, the front doorbell echoed loudly through the foyer.
Two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies stepped calmly through the open front entryway, walking straight into the dining room with official clipboards in their hands.
“Mrs. Genevieve Vance?” the lead deputy asked, his voice deep and authoritative.
Gene froze, staring at the badges in sheer horror. “Y-yes?”

“We have a court-ordered writ of possession and immediate vacation notice issued by the Superior Court, commanding you to vacate the premises within twenty-four hours, alongside a formal cease-and-desist order barring you from contacting or approaching minor child Holly Miller-Vance ever again.”
The deputies stepped to either side of Gene’s chair, standing in quiet, unyielding readiness.
