Chapter 2 - The Diner on the Edge of Town

The memory flashed instantly across my mind, pulling me back four years to a freezing, miserable Tuesday night in November.
I had been working the late-night shift at The Rusty Spoon, a modest, neon-lit diner located on the industrial edge of town near the state university campus. It was past two in the morning, and the rain was hammering against the greasy glass windows like buckshot. The diner was completely empty except for a lone figure sitting in the corner booth near the jukebox.
A young man had been staring blankly at a laminated menu, wearing a thin, soaked college hoodie, shivering so hard his teeth were visibly chattering.
I had walked over, poured a steaming mug of black coffee, and slid a plate of hot, buttered pancakes across the counter without him even asking.
"You look like you've lost your entire world, son," I had said gently, leaning against the counter.
The young man looked up, tears mixing with the rain streaming down his cheeks. "My father threw me out tonight. He said if I refused to join his corporate law firm, I was dead to him. I have nowhere to go, no money for rent, and my tuition is canceled."
"Well, nobody sits in my diner on a rainy night starving," I had replied, pulling up a stool beside him. "You eat your pancakes. We'll figure out tomorrow."
That young man was Ethan.
For the next six months, before graduation and before he ever met Lauren at a high-end corporate networking gala, Ethan had occasionally dropped by the diner. We talked about life, about books, about his dream of building his own independent architectural firm from the ground up. When he finally landed his first major design contract, he had come into the diner with tears in his eyes, hugging me tightly and calling me his guardian angel before his career took off.
When Lauren and Ethan eventually started dating a year later, Ethan never mentioned the diner lady, and I never pried into Lauren's new college boyfriend, assuming it was a common coincidence of names.
Until today.

Standing at the altar of this magnificent cathedral, looking into Ethan’s tear-filled eyes, the puzzle pieces snapped violently together. Lauren had spent two years hiding her humble background, fabricating an elaborate orphan backstory to impress Ethan’s elite family, never realizing that the man she loved had already been rescued by the very mother she was trying so desperately to erase from her life.
