Chapter 3 - The Secret Mistress and the Hard Drive

Within forty-five minutes, Richard Sterling was gone.
He had packed two suitcases with trembling hands, sputtering weak, pathetic promises about restitution and misunderstandings while Elena stood silently by the front door like a statue of judgment. The moment his luxury sedan roared down the suburban driveway and disappeared around the corner, the terrifying silence of the empty house closed in around her.
Elena walked back into the kitchen, her knees finally feeling weak. She gripped the edge of the granite island, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the adrenaline crash set in. Tears stung her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She couldn't afford to break down—not yet. Maya was due home from her study group in less than an hour, and Elena needed to figure out her next strategic move before her daughter walked through that door.
She knew Richard. She knew his cowardly, calculating nature. He wouldn't just surrender eighty-four thousand dollars without a fight, and he certainly wouldn't let his pristine corporate reputation implode without trying to cover his tracks.
*He’s going to try to scrub his digital footprint,* Elena thought sharply, her former forensic auditor instincts snapping back to life. He left behind his desktop home-office setup, but his secondary encrypted external hard drive—the one he always kept locked in his briefcase...
Elena rushed down the hall toward Richard’s private study. The room smelled faintly of his expensive sandalwood cologne and old paper. She sat down at his custom mahogany desk. The main computer was locked with a password she didn't know, but Richard had always been notoriously sloppy with secondary hardware redundancy.
She opened the bottom desk drawer and pulled out a small, black velvet pouch. Inside was a secondary USB backup drive and a spare key to his corporate safety deposit box at the local credit union downtown.
A grim, determined smile touched the corners of Elena’s mouth.
She grabbed her laptop, connected the backup drive, and began running a deep recursive file recovery script. Within minutes, hidden directories began unspooling across her screen: tax documents, personal correspondence, encrypted chat logs, and financial spreadsheets detailing every single movement of the embezzled funds.
As she opened the folder labeled Vanguard Assets, a collection of high-resolution photographs popped up on the monitor.
Elena clicked on them.
The photos were time-stamped over the last eight months. They featured Richard dining at high-end downtown restaurants, vacationing at upscale coastal resorts, and smiling intimately beside a stunning, glamorous woman in her late twenties with sharp blonde hair and designer sunglasses.
A quick reverse image search and social media cross-reference revealed her identity instantly:
*Chloe Vance.*
Age twenty-eight. Former junior marketing coordinator at Richard’s firm—and currently listed as the primary legal tenant of the luxury Bethesda condominium purchased with the exact funds stolen from Maya’s college account.
Further scrolling revealed an even more sickening discovery: Chloe wasn't just a casual mistress. She was an aspiring luxury lifestyle influencer who frequently posted photos flaunting high-end Cartier jewelry, designer handbags, and weekend getaways—all funded by a married corporate executive robbing his own family blind.
A folder titled Exit Strategy caught Elena’s eye.
She clicked it. Inside was a draft document addressed to a corporate divorce lawyer, outlining a malicious plan to initiate a fault-based separation, claim financial distress, and force the sale of the Sterling family home while hiding his primary liquid assets in offshore cryptocurrency wallets.
Richard hadn't just been stealing their savings; he had been actively planning to abandon Elena and Maya entirely, leaving them financially destitute while he ran off with his mistress.
The front door suddenly opened.
“Mom? Dad? I’m home!” Maya’s bright, cheerful voice echoed through the entryway, accompanied by the clatter of her backpack hitting the floor.
Elena snapped her laptop shut, wiped her eyes, and took a deep breath. She stood up, smoothing down her blouse, and walked out into the hallway to meet her daughter with a steady, reassuring smile.
“I’m in the kitchen, sweetie,” Elena called out, her voice strong and unbroken.
Maya walked in, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder, holding a stack of chemistry flashcards. “Hey, Mom! You won't believe it—I got an early acceptance email from Johns Hopkins University today! We need to check the college fund to pay the enrollment deposit!”
Elena’s heart twisted painfully, but she knelt down, took her daughter’s hands in hers, and looked straight into her eyes with fierce, unyielding love.

“Don't worry about the college fund, Maya,” Elena said softly, a fierce fire burning in her gaze. “Your father and I are going to pay every single cent of your tuition. And by the time we’re done, the man who tried to steal your future is going to be paying for every single lesson.”
