Chapter 3 - The Tables Turn**

By 11:30 p.m., the house on Maplewood Lane was eerily quiet.
The unpermitted renters had all packed their belongings in a frantic rush, scattering into the night after realizing they had been paying cash rent to a scammer who had no legal right to lease the property. The code enforcement officers had plastered bright red "UNSAFE FOR HABITATION" notices across every exterior door, turning the charming blue siding into a legal crime scene.
Vanessa was sitting on the edge of the living room sofa, her mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks, furiously typing on her phone while trying to call our extended relatives to spin some pathetic story about how I had suddenly returned from overseas and gone completely insane.
She quickly found out that my attorney had already sent a comprehensive factual dossier—complete with bank records, basement photos, and the police incident report—to every single aunt, uncle, and cousin in our family group chat. Her phone had stopped ringing because everyone had blocked her number.
Upstairs in the master bedroom—which had thankfully been left mostly untouched aside from being used as a rental unit—my mother was resting comfortably in her own soft, clean bed for the first time in over three years. A local paramedic crew had checked her vitals, confirming she was malnourished and suffering from chronic cold exposure, but thankfully stable. She was currently sleeping deeply, enveloped in fresh cotton sheets, safe and warm.
I stood in the upstairs hallway, leaning against the pale blue wall, watching the streetlights flicker through the maple trees outside.
Heavy footsteps echoed up the stairs. It wasn't a police officer this time. It was Ethan Vance, Vanessa’s longtime boyfriend—a slick, lazy wannabe real estate investor who had spent the last three years living off Vanessa’s allowance and secretly helping her orchestrate the scheme to turn my mother’s house into a cash cow.
He burst onto the landing, breathing heavily, his hair disheveled from rushing over from downtown.
“What the hell is going on here?!” Ethan barked, pointing a finger at my chest as he stormed down the hall. “Vanessa called me saying the cops are here and you’re throwing a tantrum! Do you have any idea how many legal contracts you just blew up? We have cash-flow operations running through this address!”
I didn't flinch. I didn't even blink. I just looked at him with icy detachment.
“Operations?” I repeated softly. “You mean running an illegal flophouse out of my property while starving my mother in a concrete basement?”
“It’s a family business strategy!” Ethan shouted, stepping closer and trying to use his height to intimidate me, just like he used to do when we were in our early twenties. “You’ve been living high on the hog in Singapore for six years while we did the dirty work of keeping an old woman alive! We deserve compensation! You can't just kick us out like dogs!”
“Watch me,” I said.
Before Ethan could raise his hand or step any closer, Detective Miller stepped out of the master bedroom, flanked by two uniformed officers who had stayed behind to secure the premises.
“Mr. Ethan Vance?” Detective Miller asked smoothly, sliding a fresh set of yellow-backed paperwork from his folder.
Ethan blinked, startled. “Yeah? Who wants to know?”
“We have matching financial warrants for your arrest,” the detective stated, his voice ringing with absolute finality. “Bank forensic audits show that over the past thirty-six months, unauthorized wire transfers totaling over eighty-four thousand dollars were siphoned from Ms. Maya Miller’s overseas escrow account into a joint personal checking account held by you and Vanessa Miller. That constitutes felony wire fraud, grand larceny, and exploitation of a vulnerable adult.”
Ethan’s mouth dropped open. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a ghost. He turned his head frantically toward the stairs where Vanessa was sitting. “Vee! You said her overseas account was a legal gray area! You said she’d never check the statements!”
“Shut up, you idiot!” Vanessa screamed from the living room below, bursting into hysterical sobs.
The two uniformed officers didn't hesitate. They stepped forward, grabbed Ethan by both arms, and spun him around against the hallway wall, the heavy click of steel handcuffs snapping shut around his wrists with a sharp, metallic ring.

“You’re ruining our lives!” Ethan yelled as they dragged him toward the stairs. “You’re destroying our future!”
“You didn't have a future,” I whispered into the empty air as they hauled him away. “You only had borrowed time.”
