Chapter 5 - The Landing in the Light of Truth

Two days later, the summit concluded with a breathtaking gala dinner overlooking the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps. The ballroom was bathed in warm golden light, filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and the vibrant energy of successful, visionary people celebrating a shared future.
I sat at the main VIP table, flanked by international partners who respected my intellect, my drive, and my vision. My phone buzzed gently against the white tablecloth. It was a video call notification from Sophia and Maya back in Antibes.
I excused myself for a moment, stepping out onto a quiet, stone-paved terrace overlooking the glittering lights of Geneva below. I tapped accept.
Instantly, the bright, smiling faces of my daughters filled the screen.
“Mommy!” Maya cheered, waving a colorful painting furiously at the camera. “Look! I painted the Mediterranean villa just like you asked! Do you like the sunset colors?”
“It’s an absolute masterpiece, sweetie,” I laughed, my heart swelling with an overwhelming rush of fierce, protective love. “You are turning into such an incredible artist.”
“Are you coming home tomorrow, Mom?” Sophia asked softly, her intelligent, observant eyes searching my face through the screen. “We missed you at dinner tonight.”
“I’ll be home tomorrow afternoon, my loves,” I promised, smiling warmly against the cool alpine breeze. “And we’re going to celebrate this weekend. We’re taking the boat out to the islands, just the three of us.”
“Yay!” Maya squealed, clapping her hands. “We love you, Mommy!”
“I love you both more than words can say. Be good for nanny, and I’ll see you tomorrow.”
I hung up the call, holding the phone against my chest for a second, looking up at the infinite canopy of glittering stars stretching across the European night sky.
I thought back to that bleak morning in the Seattle attorney’s office five years ago. I had walked out of those doors feeling like I was carrying the heavy, fractured pieces of a broken life. But life isn't about the wreckage someone else leaves behind; it’s about what you choose to build from the ashes.
Mark Vance had traded his daughters for a son, believing he was securing his legacy, only to find himself standing empty-handed in a hotel lobby, surrounded by the ruins of his own superficial empire. Meanwhile, my daughters and I had crossed oceans, built a global enterprise, and cultivated a life overflowing with genuine love, respect, and boundless possibility.

We didn't need a king or a dynasty to anchor us. We were our own kingdom.
I took one last deep breath of the crisp mountain air, turned around, and walked back into the brilliant, golden light of the ballroom—ready for whatever horizon came next.
