Chapter 3 - The Scramble of the Rats**

The heavy oak doors of the Riverton County Courthouse swung open, releasing a flood of afternoon sunlight and a swarm of agitated legal teams into the grand marble lobby. News vans from three regional networks were already parked along the curb, their satellite dishes raised toward the sky as local reporters caught wind of the high-profile financial scandal breaking inside Department Four.

Julian burst through the double doors first, his tailored suit jacket half-unbuttoned, his tie askew, and sweat beading heavily across his forehead. He looked less like a corporate titan and more like a hunted animal cornered in a dark alley.

“Get those cameras away from me! Turn those off!” Julian shouted wildly, lunging forward with his arm raised to swat away a cameraman’s lens.

“Mr. Vance! Is it true you concealed over a million dollars from your wife?” a reporter called out, shoving a microphone directly into his face. “Can you comment on the federal fraud investigation?”

Chloe pushed past him, her designer shoes clicking frantically against the marble floor as she tried to distance herself from the sinking ship. “Leave me alone! I didn’t know anything about his illegal accounts! He used me just as much as he used everyone else!” she wailed to the press, her mascara running in dark streaks down her cheeks.

Wendy walked out behind them with rigid, trembling steps, supported by her horrified attorney who was already loudly explaining that he could no longer represent them given the severity of the criminal fraud charges. Wendy looked around the crowded lobby, her aristocratic pride utterly pulverized, expecting sympathetic faces from the high-society acquaintances who usually bowed to her presence.

Instead, the socialites and local business associates who had spent years kissing up to the Vance family quickly averted their eyes, turning their backs or walking briskly toward the side exits to avoid being tainted by association. In the ruthless world of high society, nothing is more toxic than a disgraced bankrupt.

Clara emerged from the courtroom a few minutes later, flanked by her own legal team and carrying herself with the quiet grace of a queen who had just reclaimed her throne. She wore an expression of calm, unshakable dignity.

As she stepped out onto the wide stone steps of the courthouse, the sea of reporters instantly shifted their focus away from Julian and rushed toward her like a tidal wave.

“Mrs. Sterling! Mrs. Sterling! Over here!” shouted the lead investigative reporter for the regional daily. “How did you uncover the offshore accounts? Is it true your husband tried to leave you with nothing?”

Clara paused at the top of the steps, looking down at the gathered press corps with steady, clear eyes. She did not rush. She let the flashing camera bulbs pop like a storm of summer lightning.

“For years, my husband believed that silence and financial control were weapons he could use to erase me,” Clara said into the wall of microphones, her voice carrying absolute authority across the plaza. “He assumed that because I chose not to fight back publicly, I lacked the strength to defend myself. He was wrong. Financial abuse and domestic manipulation operate in the dark—so I simply turned on the lights.”

Down near the bottom of the steps, Julian stopped dead in his tracks, turning around to stare up at her with a face twisted in a mixture of unadulterated hatred and pathetic desperation.

“Clara! Please!” Julian cried out, ignoring the cameras as he took two steps back up the stone stairs toward her. “We can fix this! We can settle out of court! Don’t do this to your own family—think of all the years we shared!”

Clara looked down at him, her gaze as cold and indifferent as if she were looking at a stranger slipping in the mud.

“The only thing we share now, Julian, is a court docket and a federal prosecutor,” Clara replied softly, loud enough for the nearest microphones to catch every word. “Enjoy prison. The food is paid for by taxpayers, which means you won't have to embezzle a dime to eat.”

A sharp wave of laughter rippled through the gathered crowd of reporters and onlookers. Julian’s face flushed a deep, incandescent crimson of pure, impotent rage. He lunged forward as if he were going to climb the remaining steps and grab her, but two burly court security guards materialized instantly, crossing their heavy arms and blocking his path with unyielding force.

“Step back, sir. Keep moving or you’ll spend tonight in a holding cell,” the lead guard warned, grabbing Julian firmly by the shoulder and spinning him around toward the curb.

Wendy stood by the fountain, watching her son get physically pushed away from the woman he had tried to destroy. Her knees buckled slightly, and she had to catch herself against the stone rim of the basin. The dynasty she had spent decades building had imploded in less than an hour, consumed by the very arrogance that birthed it.

Clara turned away from them, descending the remaining steps toward a sleek black car waiting at the curb with the door held open by her attorney. She slid gracefully into the back seat, pulled the door closed, and watched through the tinted glass as the chaotic circus of Julian’s life dissolved into the background.

The battle was won. But the true cleanup—and the ultimate rebuilding of her empire—was only just beginning.
