Chapter 3 - The Scavengers Scatter**

By evening, the illusion of the Vance family’s high-society invincibility had dissolved into a mountain of ash and legal briefs.
News of Flynn’s arrest for corporate wire fraud and the sudden freezing of Vance Corporation assets hit the financial news networks like a tidal wave. Tech blogs, morning newspapers, and business journals ran breathless headlines detailing the spectacular collapse of a CEO who had tried to build an empire on stolen foundations.
I sat in the penthouse study of our downtown residence—a residence that now legally belonged solely to the Hart Trust—watching the sunset cast brilliant shades of purple and gold over the Chicago skyline. The city lights flickered to life below, beautiful, distant, and completely indifferent to human drama.
My phone buzzed relentlessly on the marble desk. Dozens of frantic missed calls and unhinged text messages from Flynn’s mother, Beatrice, who had spent the last five years treating me like an uninvited servant in her son’s house. There were also pleading voice notes from Flynn himself, calling from a holding cell, begging for mercy, mediation, and a way out of the federal indictment.
I blocked every single number with a single, satisfying swipe of my thumb.
There was no room for mercy for a man who had stood outside an ICU while monitors beeped a frantic rhythm for my life, signing papers to cast me aside like broken equipment.
The heavy oak door of the study clicked open. Jonathan Mercer stepped inside, carrying a fresh portfolio containing the emergency restructuring documents for the company.
"The board has accepted your provisional appointment as interim CEO, Claire," Jonathan said, his expression softening into an admiring smile. "The institutional investors are standing by. They’ve made it clear they trust the Hart family name far more than they ever trusted Flynn."
"Thank you, Jonathan," I replied, standing up and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "How are the temporary holding arrangements for the corporate assets coming along?"
"Flawless. Every subsidiary Flynn tried to siphon off has been frozen and brought back under trust protection. Furthermore, Beatrice Vance’s monthly social stipends—which were secretly being funded out of your personal trust accounts without your knowledge—have been legally terminated. She’s currently packing her bags to vacate her country club estate by midnight."
A quiet, profound sense of peace washed over my chest. The pain from my surgical incisions was fading, replaced by the indomitable strength of a mother who had stared death in the face and walked away victorious.
"Good," I murmured. "Let her experience what it's like to build something from the ground up, instead of scavenging off someone else's legacy."
May you like
Jonathan nodded respectfully, placed the portfolio on the desk, and quietly exited the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts and the quiet, steady hum of the city.
