Chapter 2 - The Digital Evidence and the Cracking Facade**

The living room fell into a silence so profound you could hear the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Diane lunged forward with surprising speed, her hands clawing toward the iPad in Lily’s small hands.
“Give me that!” Diane screeched, her mask of sweet motherhood completely shattered.
Before Diane could snatch the device, Ryan stepped between them, his towering frame blocking his mother entirely. His face had gone pale, a dark, dangerous storm brewing in his eyes as he looked down at his niece.
“Lily,” Ryan said, his voice dropping into a harsh, controlled whisper. “Step back. Show me what’s on that screen right now.”
Lily nodded timidly, stepping past her grandmother—who was now trembling and muttering frantic denials—and handed the iPad to Ryan. My husband’s fingers shook slightly as he pressed the play button on the video file Lily had instinctively recorded through her bedroom door ajar.
The audio filled the quiet room instantly.
We heard Noah’s muffled cries echoing from downstairs. Then, Diane’s sharp, venomous voice rang out crystal clear through the speaker: “Shut up, you miserable little brat. Nobody wants you around anyway. Let’s see how much you cry when you hit the floor.”
A second later, the distinct sound of a body dropping onto the carpet played, followed immediately by Noah’s terrified, ear-piercing shriek.
The video continued for a few seconds, showing Diane standing over the couch, rolling her eyes and muttering, “Dramatic little cow of a mother, just like her.”
Ryan stopped the video. The screen went black, reflecting his own horrified, pale face.
For a long, agonizing moment, Ryan didn't move. He didn't speak. He simply stood frozen in the center of the living room, the full, devastating reality of his mother’s cruelty crashing down upon him like a tidal wave. For years, Diane had managed to manipulate him, playing the sweet, self-sacrificing matriarch while subtly undermining our marriage and terrorizing anyone who opposed her. But there was no spinning this. There was no gaslighting away a high-definition recording of her throwing an infant and wishing him harm.
Ryan slowly turned around. His dark eyes locked onto Diane, who was now backing away toward the front door, her hands shaking as she tried to smooth her blouse.
“Mom…” Ryan’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of a sledgehammer. “Get out.”
“Ryan, darling, listen to me!” Diane stammered, her voice pitching up into a hysterical screech. “That girl—she edited that video! She manipulated her! You know how unstable Emily is! You can't throw your own mother out on the street for a brat’s crying fit—”
“I said, get out,” Ryan roared, stepping forward with a fury that made even Diane recoil in genuine terror. “If you are still breathing or standing on my property in sixty seconds, I will call the police myself, file charges for child endangerment and physical abuse, and ensure you never see a single member of this family again for the rest of your life.”
Diane realized the game was over. Her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. She pointed a shaking, manicured finger directly at me, then at Ryan.
“You will regret this!” she screamed, slamming the front door behind her so hard the decorative plates on the wall rattled.
The front door clicked shut. The house went dead quiet again.
I didn't say a word. I walked over to the couch, picked up Noah—who had finally exhausted himself into a light, whimpering sleep—and turned my back on Ryan, walking toward the nursery without casting a single glance in his direction.

Ryan stood alone in the living room, his hands trembling as he stared down at the iPad in his palm, realizing that the foundation of his entire family had just turned to dust.
