Chapter 4 - The Shadow Board

High above the rainy streets of downtown Chicago, inside the glass-and-steel penthouse of the Vance Financial Tower, Arthur Vance poured himself a scotch as he stared out at the glittering skyline.
At seventy, Arthur was a relic of old-money ruthlessness, a man who had built his fortune on hostile takeovers, corporate extortion, and the quiet elimination of anyone who stood between him and total market dominance.
His phone buzzed on the sleek marble bar.
Arthur picked it up. It was a secure satellite feed from his encrypted domestic server.
*Signal lost: Node-Cray Estate.*
Arthur’s white eyebrows drew together in a harsh, suspicious frown. He tapped his communicator ring, activating the direct audio channel to Victor Strand’s secure personal line.
The line rang twice. Then clicked open.
Instead of Victor’s smooth, servile voice, a deep, resonant tone echoed through the receiver—a voice Arthur hadn't heard clearly in three agonizingly long years.
*“He can't answer right now, Arthur,”* Dominic Cray said smoothly through the speaker. “He’s currently taking a nap in the basement.”
Arthur froze, the glass of scotch slipping slightly in his grip. “Dominic? You… you’re speaking.”
*“I’m listening, too,”* Dominic’s voice replied, dripping with suppressed rage. “And I have to say, your choice of medical equipment leaves a lot to be desired. The local-frequency static gave me terrible migraines for eighteen months.”
Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs. The illusion was shattered. The puppet had cut his strings, and he was holding the knife.
“You’re delusional, Cray,” Arthur spat, recovering his composure with practiced venom. “The stress of the estate has finally broken your mind. We’ll send medical transport in the morning to place you under proper psychiatric care.”
*“Don't bother sending transport,”* Dominic replied, his voice chillingly calm. “Send your lawyers. Send your resignation letters. Because by sunrise, every federal regulatory agency, SEC investigator, and investigative journalist in the country is going to have the complete financial ledger of your shell companies downloaded directly from Victor’s terminal.”
“You wouldn't dare,” Arthur hissed. “If I go down, I expose everything—including your own offshore asset holdings.”
*“Let it burn,”* Dominic said quietly. “Let it all burn to the ground.”
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Arthur Vance stared at his phone in absolute, paralyzed disbelief. He slammed the glass down, shattering it against the marble bar, amber liquid splashing across the polished stone like blood.

“Get me the cleaning crew,” Arthur snarled into the intercom on his desk. “And get me contact details for the mercenaries we used in Prague. Tonight, Dominic Cray and everyone inside that estate ceases to exist.”
