Chapter 4 - Beyond the Threshold**

The knocking came again—firm, measured, and impossible to ignore. Mila walked across the creaking floorboards as if walking toward a firing squad. Her hand hovered over the brass doorknob for a second before she twisted it and pulled the door open. Luca stood in the dim, flickering hallway, towering over the threshold. Up close, the raw, magnetic gravity of his presence was overwhelming. His sharp jaw was set, his dark eyes instantly sweeping over her from head to toe, checking every inch of her for signs of physical harm. When he saw that she was physically intact—aside from the trembling in her hands and the wide, panicked look in her eyes—the rigid tension in his shoulders dropped a fraction.
"Mila," he said, his deep, resonant voice wrapping around her name like a physical touch. It wasn't angry. It wasn't impatient. It was remarkably, terrifyingly gentle. "Are you going to invite me in, or do you plan on freezing me out here in the hallway?"
"Mr. Romano," she stammered, stepping back instinctively to clear the entryway. "I... I don't know what came over me. You shouldn't have come. It was a mistake, a stupid, intoxicated impulse—"
Luca didn't wait for her to finish stumbling over her excuses. He stepped past her into the apartment, the subtle scent of expensive cologne, rain, and cedar immediately overwhelming the cramped space. He closed the door behind him with a soft click, shutting out the rest of the world. His gaze slowly roamed over her modest, cluttered living room—the stacks of legal textbooks, the half-empty mug of tea, the worn sofa—before his intense eyes locked back onto hers.
"People don't text me at midnight asking to be rescued unless they mean it, Mila," Luca said quietly, closing the distance between them until he stood just inches away. He didn't loom over her menacingly; instead, he watched her with an unsettling, profound focus that made it impossible to look away. "You spent two years making sure you were invisible at the office. You never asked for a favor, never complained about the workload, and never let anyone see behind the mask. So tell me the truth. Why tonight? Why me?"
May you like
Mila swallowed hard, a lump forming in her throat as the emotional dam she had built around herself finally began to fracture. "Because everyone else in my life treats me like I'm either invisible or replaceable," she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of her honesty. "And you... even when you're cold, even when everyone else is shaking in the room with you, you look at me like I actually exist. I was scared, Luca. And I didn't want to be alone anymore."
