Chapter 3 - The Arrival of the Cavalry

A few minutes later, the heavy glass doors at the end of the hospital corridor swung open with a rapid, metallic whoosh. Footsteps came pounding down the linoleum floor—fast, purposeful, and heavy with controlled fury.

Lily instinctively straightened in her chair, her small hands pulling tighter into her sleeves as she turned toward the entrance.

My sister, Chloe, appeared in the doorway. She was breathing heavily, clutching a leather designer purse in one hand and her phone gripped so tightly in the other that her knuckles were entirely bloodless. Her eyes swept the room, taking in the IV pole, the sterile white sheets, and the pale, bruised contours of my face. A fleeting, agonized expression of horror crossed her features, but Chloe didn't break down into weeping or paralyzed shock. She didn't waste a single second on useless, pitying questions.

She marched straight across the room, bypassed the edge of the bed, walked up to Lily, and gently placed both hands on the sides of my daughter's head, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to the crown of her hair.

"You're a warrior," Chloe whispered to the little girl, her voice thick with unshed tears. "I am so, so proud of you, baby."

Lily let out a shaky, audible breath, the last remaining tension bleeding out of her small frame as she leaned into my sister’s embrace. Chloe then pulled the plastic chair closer to the edge of the mattress, sat down, and tossed her purse onto the floor with a dull thud.

"I got it," Chloe said, looking directly at me. Her voice was cold, sharp, and entirely lethal.

My throat tightened into a painful knot. I opened my mouth to apologize, to murmur something about how I was going to handle it, but Chloe held up a single hand, cutting me off before I could utter a single syllable of self-defense.

"Don't you dare," Chloe warned softly. She reached down, tapped the screen of her phone, and unlocked it with a swift motion. "Before I came into this room, I sent copies of that video file to three different places: my personal encrypted cloud, my attorney’s office downtown, and the direct dispatch supervisor at the county sheriff's department."

I gasped, sitting up slightly despite the searing pain in my abdomen. "Chloe, wait... Arthur has connections. The local sheriff—"

"The local sheriff doesn't mean a damn thing when the state police get a hold of unedited felony assault footage accompanied by a minor child's corroborated testimony," Chloe interrupted, her eyes flashing with righteous fire. "There are no local good-boy favors that can bury a video of your husband whipping you with a wet rope while his mother stands in the doorway cheering him on."

She looked past me at Lily for a second, softening her tone before turning back to the screen. "There's something in that video you need to hear again, big sister. You were in shock when it happened, and your brain blocked out the audio details that didn't fit your survival script."

I shook my head slowly against the hospital pillow. "I remember my mother-in-law's voice. I remember her laughing. I'll never get that sound out of my head."

Chloe shook her head, her jaw tightening. "Not her."

Lily suddenly went completely rigid beside my bed, staring down at Chloe's phone as if it were about to detonate.

Chloe unlocked the video file, slid the volume bar up until it was loud enough to hear clearly, but held the speaker close to the mattress so it wouldn't echo through the open ward. She pressed play. The tinny, compressed audio began to fill the quiet space of the room. I heard the rustle of the dry grass outside the shed. I heard the terrifying scrape of the coarse rope tightening around the wooden beam. I heard my own ragged, desperate breathing. And then, clear as day, came the wet, sickening snap of the leather-wrapped rope cutting through the air.

Then came Martha's cackling laughter, echoing off the wooden walls.

And right beneath Martha’s laughter, a second voice spoke—a voice so casual, so utterly devoid of humanity, that it made my blood instantly turn to slush in my veins.

Chloe stopped the video right there, freezing the progress bar at 0:42.

She looked from Lily to me, her eyes dark with a terrifying promise. And then, Chloe slowly slid her phone out of her hand and placed it directly into my trembling palm.
