Chapter 6 - Emily’s Revelation

Later that afternoon, after giving my full statement to the detectives, I drove back to St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital.
Sophie and Ben had been moved out of the pediatric intensive care unit into a private recovery ward. Their color was returning, though they still looked pale and exhausted against the hospital pillows.
Emily was sitting in the corner armchair, staring blankly at the floor. When I opened the door and stepped inside, she flinched as if expecting another blow.
"Emily," I said softly, closing the door behind me.
She looked up. Her eyes were hard, but beneath the anger lay a deep, bottomless well of exhaustion. "Are you here to apologize? Or are the police coming to question me next?"
"I'm here to tell you everything," I replied, walking over and pulling up a chair opposite her. I placed the manila folder on the bedside table. "Every single thing Nathan hid from both of us."
Emily looked down at the folder, then back at me. "What is that?"
"The reason he tried to kill me," I said, my voice steady. "And the reason he was so desperate for money that he gambled away your children's future."
I spent the next twenty minutes explaining the DNA discovery, the hidden trust fund, the loan shark debts, and the forged narrative of his adoption. As I spoke, Emily’s face transformed from skepticism to horror, and finally to a cold, burning fury that burned brighter than my own.
"He lied to me," Emily whispered, her hands balling into tight fists in her lap. "When we got married, he told me his parents died in a horrific crash when he was a toddler and that you rescued him out of the goodness of your heart. He made you out to be a saint."
"He lied to protect his own pride," I said gently, reaching across to touch her hand. She didn't pull away. "And when his bad investments caught up with him, he decided my life was worth half a million dollars to clear his slate."
Emily looked over at the hospital beds where Sophie and Ben were sleeping peacefully, their chests rising and falling in rhythmic unison. A tear slipped down her cheek.
"I'm leaving him, Margaret," Emily said, her voice dropping into an unshakeable, resolute tone. "I'm filing for divorce tonight. I'm changing the children's last names. And I will testify against him in court for every single charge the district attorney brings."

I squeezed her hand tightly. "I will stand right beside you."
