Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Law**

The sharp, piercing wail of police sirens tearing through the quiet suburban neighborhood echoed down our street just minutes after Marcus unlocked the door. The sound grew louder until the flashing red and blue lights of two cruiser cars painted wild, frantic patterns across the living room walls.

Eleanor panicked, pacing frantically near the dining table. “Turn off that phone! Tell them it was a false alarm! Do you want the whole neighborhood to see this disgrace?!”

Marcus stood frozen near the open deadbolt, the phone still clutched in his sweaty palm, the dispatcher’s voice urging calm from the speaker. I didn't wait for him. I dragged myself across the kitchen floor toward the front entrance, pressing my hand against my throbbing eyebrow and breathing through another heavy contraction.

Heavy boots crunched on the gravel path outside. A loud, firm knock rattled the front door before an officer pushed it open, stepping into the hallway with a hand resting cautiously on his utility belt.

“Police department. Dispatch received a call reporting a domestic disturbance and physical assault. Everyone stay where you are,” commanded Officer Hayes, a tall, stern-faced veteran whose eyes immediately darted across the chaotic scene: the puddle on the floor, my blood-stained shirt, Eleanor’s defensive posture, and Marcus standing helplessly by the door.

Eleanor immediately rushed forward, putting on a sickeningly sweet, theatrical smile. “Oh, Officer, thank goodness you’re here! My daughter-in-law is having a severe hormonal breakdown. She fell down the hallway stairs by accident, and in her hysterical state, she’s making up wild accusations—”

“Ma'am, step back and keep your hands where I can see them,” Officer Hayes interrupted sharply, cutting through her rehearsed performance. He walked past her, kneeling down on the floor next to me. “Are you alright, miss? Do you need an ambulance?”

“My water broke,” I panted, gripping his sleeve as another contraction tore through my body. “And she... she hit me. My husband locked the door so I couldn't leave.”

Officer Hayes’s expression hardened instantly. He signaled back toward the open doorway, and two paramedics rushed into the house with a gurney and emergency medical bags, accompanied by a second backup officer.

“Officer, you can't listen to her!” Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic facade completely crumbling as panic set in. “She’s unstable! She’s trying to steal my grandchild! My son will tell you—he locked the door just to calm her down!”

Officer Hayes stood up slowly, turning his severe gaze toward Marcus, who was now backed into a corner near the entryway.

“Is that true, sir? Did you lock your wife inside while she was injured and going into labor?” the officer asked, his hand hovering near his handcuffs.

Marcus opened his mouth, glancing nervously at his mother, who was glaring at him with murderous intensity. For a second, he looked like he wanted to fold back into his cowardice. But looking down at me on the floor, surrounded by paramedics strapping me onto the stretcher with an oxygen mask over my face, something inside him finally snapped.

“No,” Marcus whispered hoarsely. “She didn't fall. My mother hit her. And I... I locked the door because my mother told me to.”

Eleanor let out a sharp, breathless gasp of pure betrayal. “You ungrateful, spineless coward!” she screamed, lunging toward him, but the backup officer immediately stepped between them, taking out his cuffs.

“Marcus Sterling and Eleanor Sterling, you are both being detained for domestic assault, unlawful restraint, and reckless endangerment,” Officer Hayes announced smoothly as the metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the foyer.

As the paramedics wheeled me out through the front door toward the waiting ambulance, the flashing lights illuminated the snowy lawn. For the first time in years, I felt the heavy chains of their control fall away. I was finally free.
