Chapter 2 - The Stolen Lifeline**

I felt Ethan’s hand close gently around mine on the cold concrete. His thumb was shaking uncontrollably, not from fear, but from the furious storm brewing inside him.

“Did they take your phone?” he asked softly, his eyes searching mine.

I nodded weakly.

Brenda piped up quickly from the top of the stairs, her voice rising in defensive panic. “We didn't take anything! She dropped it during her tantrum!”

“It was in my hand,” I whispered, tears mixing with the blood near my eyebrow. “She ripped it from my grip before your dad dragged me down here.”

Ethan stood up. He didn't move wildly or aggressively. He simply positioned his broad frame directly between me and the stairs, pulled out his own cell phone, and dialed emergency services, immediately reading off our address while Thomas shouted at him to hang up.

Ethan ignored his father entirely.

Enraged that he was losing control, Thomas took a step down into the basement. “Son, think about what you’re doing. You’re destroying this family over a dramatic whim.”

Ethan’s voice was terrifyingly quiet. “I am thinking. Stay back.”

Instead of listening, Thomas crossed the basement in two massive strides. Before Ethan could react, his father lunged forward and ripped the phone out of Ethan’s hand, throwing it hard against the concrete wall where it shattered into a dozen useless plastic pieces.

“You are not calling outsiders into my house!” Thomas roared, his face purple with fury.

I let out a soft cry as another wave of agonizing pressure gripped my spine, but Ethan didn't flinch. He didn't yell back. With terrifying calm, Ethan turned around, scooped me up gently into his arms, and carried me up the basement stairs past his sputtering father and stepmother before they could block the doorway.

He kicked open the front door, carried me out onto the sunlit porch, and flagged down a passing delivery truck driver, ordering him to call 911 immediately.

Within minutes, the wail of sirens pierced the quiet afternoon air. Two police cruisers and an ambulance rocketed down the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing wildly against the polished brick facade of the estate.

Officer Vance, a seasoned precinct veteran, leaped out of his cruiser, his hand resting on his holster as he took in the chaotic scene: Ethan holding me tenderly on the porch, my bloody dress, and Thomas and Brenda standing nervously in the doorway trying to paste on innocent smiles.

“What is going on here?” Officer Vance demanded, stepping onto the porch.

Brenda immediately rushed forward, weeping crocodile tears. “Officer, thank goodness! My daughter-in-law fell down the basement stairs during a mental breakdown! My husband tried to help her, and now my ungrateful son is shouting wild accusations—”

“Shut up, Brenda,” Ethan interrupted, his voice cutting through her lies like a razor blade. He looked directly at the officer. “They didn't just find her after a fall. They locked her in the basement. They took her phone, assaulted her while she’s seven months pregnant, and when I tried to call for an ambulance, my father smashed my phone against the floor.”

Officer Vance’s eyes narrowed. He looked at Thomas, who was suddenly sweating profusely. “Is that true, sir?”

Thomas swallowed hard, his arrogance finally cracking. “We were just trying to contain a difficult situation—”

“That’s an admission of unlawful restraint,” Officer Vance said crisply, unlatching his cuffs. “Thomas Sterling and Brenda Sterling, turn around and place your hands behind your backs. You are under arrest for domestic assault, unlawful imprisonment, and tampering with emergency communications.”

As the metallic click of handcuffs echoed across the porch, the paramedics rushed up with a gurney, loading me carefully into the back of the ambulance while Ethan climbed in right beside me, holding my hand all the way to the hospital.
