Chapter 2 - The General’s Direct Order**

“At ease, Captain,” I said smoothly, stepping out from the dim shadows of the garage into the cold morning light.

The Captain dropped his salute, his eyes flashing with a mix of deep respect and restrained fury as he glanced at the frost-covered garage behind me, then at my heavily pregnant stomach, and finally at my astonished family frozen in the doorway.

My father’s newspaper slipped from his trembling hands, fluttering down onto the porch steps. My mother clutched her chest, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as her brain struggled to process the silver oak leaf insignia gleaming on the Captain’s collar—an insignia that outranked any local authority, civilian contractor, or corporate executive they had ever groveled before.

Julian finally found his voice, stepping forward with an aggressive, defensive snarl.

“What the hell is the meaning of this?!” Julian barked, pointing a shaking finger at the heavily armed soldiers surrounding his Audi. “Who do you think you are barging onto private property? Do you know how much money I—?”

“Shut your mouth, civilian,” the Captain barked back, his voice snapping like a whip with such lethal intensity that Julian actually recoiled, stumbling backward into the doorframe.

I walked past the Captain, my boots clicking rhythmically against the frozen pavement as I approached my family. The submissive, tearful woman they had bullied ten minutes ago had completely vanished.

“Major... Major Vance?” my mother stammered, her voice cracking as she looked at me as though I were a ghost. “What... what is going on? Why is this man calling you a Major? You... you worked in a supply office!”

“That was the cover story required by the Pentagon, Mother,” I replied, my voice chillingly calm. “Just like David’s work wasn't a civilian consultancy. He was a Lieutenant Colonel leading classified black-ops units. Everything this house stands for—every brick, every beam, every mortgage payment—was paid for by the United States government and my active-duty salary. Not a single cent of it belongs to you, and certainly not to Julian’s investment firm.”

Harper’s face drained of all color. She grabbed the doorframe for support, her silk robe slipping slightly off her shoulder. “You... you lied to us? For twelve years?”

“Security clearances don't require family approval,” I said sharply.

I turned back to the Captain, gesturing toward the open garage doors where my single cardboard box sat on the cold concrete.

“Captain, secure my personal effects from the secondary cache inside the house. Then draft an immediate seizure notice for the property under the National Defense Housing Act. This domicile is being re-designated as a temporary federal operational staging ground.”

“With pleasure, Ma’am,” the Captain saluted, turning sharply to his squad. “Team two, move in! Clear the house!”

Before my parents could utter another protest, half a dozen heavily armed, elite military police marched past them through the front door, turning my family’s luxurious Thanksgiving morning into an active federal zone.
