Chapter 4 - The Legal Storm**

The fallout for David and Helen was swift, merciless, and absolute.

While Maya recovered safely in a private maternity suite at St. Jude Memorial Hospital, surrounded by supportive corporate colleagues and guarded by hospital security, my father’s corporate legal team—which I had mobilized immediately—descended upon the family restaurant and David’s personal finances like a swarm of locusts.

The criminal charges filed against Helen and David were staggering: felony kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, aggravated domestic assault, financial fraud, and elder/dependent abuse relating to the misuse of medical equipment. Because Maya was over seven months pregnant, the state prosecutor added sentence-enhancement charges for endangering an unborn child, ensuring that neither of them would see freedom anytime soon.

Furthermore, forensic accountants uncovered a massive web of financial deceit. David had systematically siphoned nearly one hundred and fifty thousand dollars from Maya’s personal savings and stock options to bail out the failing family restaurant, forging her signature on multiple digital loan documents. Armed with these ironclad bank records, our legal team moved swiftly to freeze all restaurant accounts, seize the business assets, and transfer full ownership of the commercial property directly into Maya’s name as restitution.

Helen, abandoned by her frantic defense attorney once the overwhelming digital and witness evidence surfaced, attempted to cut a plea deal by throwing David under the bus, claiming he was the mastermind behind the isolation plot. David, in turn, retaliated by releasing recorded phone calls of Helen bragging about how easy it would be to control Maya’s inheritance once she was legally declared mentally incapacitated.

Watching the siblings tear each other apart in court felt like watching a Greek tragedy scripted by karma.

Two weeks after the rescue, I sat beside Maya’s hospital bed as she reviewed the final settlement documents brought by our corporate lawyer. Her color had returned, her bruised cheek was healing nicely, and the fierce, brilliant light in her eyes shone brighter than ever.

“Well, Maya,” our attorney smiled, closing the leather folder. “As of this morning, the corporate accounts are fully restored, David’s access is permanently blocked, and the restaurant is officially yours. You can liquidate it, sell it, or run it yourself. The choice is entirely up to you.”

Maya looked out the large hospital window at the bright spring sunshine filtering through the glass. She placed a gentle, loving hand over her rounded belly, where her baby kicked with healthy, joyful energy.

“I don't want the restaurant,” Maya said calmly, a peaceful smile gracing her lips. “Sell the building, distribute the proceeds to the employees who stood up for me that night, and let’s close that painful chapter forever.”
