Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Floor and the Chilling Confession**

The kitchen tile felt like jagged ice against my right cheek, but I didn't dare move a muscle. Beside me, my ten-year-old son, Lucas, lay crumpled near his chair, his breathing frighteningly shallow. Just moments earlier, we had both taken our final bites of the homemade beef stew Christopher had so meticulously prepared for us, only for our limbs to turn to lead and our vision to blur into blackness. I knew instantly that I couldn't afford to pass out completely. Survival instinct, sharper than any blade, kept my consciousness tethered to reality while my body betrayed me. I forced my eyes half-shut, watching through the dim shadows as my husband, Christopher, walked back into the room with measured, unhurried steps. He didn't rush to check our pulses or panic at the sight of his family collapsed on the floor. Instead, he stood over us like a predator assessing its kill. I felt the light breeze of his movement as he briefly lifted my wrist, checking for a pulse before dropping my hand carelessly back onto the linoleum. When he moved to Lucas, a cold spike of terror pierced my heart. He placed a heavy hand on my son’s small shoulder, murmuring words that sounded sickeningly tender yet carried a lethal undertone. “This will be easier for everyone,” he whispered.
The sound of his voice triggered an electric fury beneath my paralyzed exterior. I heard him pick up a glass from the counter before walking down the hall toward his den. A moment later, the muffled sound of his voice drifted through the walls. He was on the phone, speaking with someone in low, calculated tones. “It’s done,” he said, his voice devoid of any human warmth. “Soon, they’ll both be gone.” I committed those words to memory, anchoring them to my sanity as the poison surged through my veins. When I heard his footsteps returning down the hall, I instantly relaxed my muscles, letting my eyes drift shut and feigning absolute unconsciousness. Christopher stopped beside me once more, lingering for what felt like an eternity before walking toward the garage. The heavy mechanical hum of the garage door opening and closing signaled his departure, leaving behind an oppressive, terrifying silence. The moment the vibration faded, Lucas let out a sharp gasp. I opened my eyes, locked gazes with my terrified son, and immediately pressed a single finger against my lips to command absolute silence. We were trapped in our own home, poisoned by the man who had promised to protect us, but the game was far from over.
