Chapter 4 - The Unraveling at Gate 42

"Sarah...?" Christopher choked out, taking an involuntary step backward, nearly tripping over his own heavy flight bag. His eyes darted wildly between me and Toby, then flicked toward Genevieve, who was now staring at us with wide, horrified eyes, her hand still resting on her stomach. "What... what are you doing here? How is this possible?"

"We wanted to give you a surprise, Chris," I replied, my voice dangerously steady, carrying a cold, sharp edge that made several passing travelers turn their heads. I stepped closer, refusing to let him shrink away from the carnage he had created. "You always said you loved surprises. Isn't this wonderful? Your whole family came all the way from Columbus just to hear your voice."

Genevieve’s face went completely white. She looked at Christopher with sheer betrayal etched into every feature. "Chris... who is this? What is she talking about? You told me you were unmarried! You told me you were going through a messy divorce process years ago!"

"Genevieve, wait, let me explain—" Christopher stammered, raising a hand frantically as he tried to bridge the physical space between his two entirely separate lives, now colliding violently at Gate 42.

"Don't you dare touch her," I snapped, stepping directly into his path.

Down beside me, Toby finally understood. The puzzle pieces had clicked together in his young mind with terrifying clarity. He looked up at his father—the man whose posters covered his bedroom walls, the man he defended to every kid at school—with an expression of profound, soul-crushing disillusionment.

"Dad?" Toby’s voice cut through the shouting, small, cracked, and infinitely sad. "Who is that lady? And... and why did you say on the airplane microphone that you were going to have a little girl with her? Am I... am I not your kid anymore?"

Christopher flinched as if he had been physically struck. He dropped to his knees right there on the airport carpet, ignoring the stares of hundred of travelers rushing past us. "Toby, buddy... please. It's not what you think. Dad loves you more than anything in the world. I'm so sorry—"

"Don't you ever lie to him again," I hissed, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. I reached down, scooped Toby into my arms, and pulled him tightly against my chest, shielding his face from the pathetic sight of his father kneeling on the floor. "You're done, Christopher. Your career, your secret little life, your lies—they're all finished. I am calling a lawyer the second we step out of this airport, and you will never, ever lie to my son again."

Genevieve, tears streaming down her face, pulled a silver ring off her left hand and hurled it straight into Christopher’s chest before turning and rushing blindly toward the exit, sobbing uncontrollably. Christopher stayed on his knees, staring blankly at the polished linoleum floor as his entire carefully constructed house of cards collapsed into dust.
