Chapter 7 - A New Dawn

Two weeks later, the suburban house felt lighter, brighter, and entirely our own.
The lingering trauma of that terrifying birthday party evening was slowly fading, replaced by the joyful, carefree laughter of a six-year-old girl running across the backyard sprinkler with her golden retriever.
Lily was fully recovered, her energetic spirit completely restored. She didn't talk about Grandma Diane anymore; children have a remarkable capacity to forget monsters once the shadows are chased away by safety and love.
Michael and I stood on the back patio, watching her play as the afternoon sun painted the sky in shades of amber and violet.
"The estate trust transfer went through this morning," Michael said softly, slipping his arm around my waist and pulling me close. "Marcus handled the final paperwork with the probate court. The entire estate fund is officially locked into Lily’s independent collegiate and medical trust. Nobody can ever touch it."
I rested my head against his shoulder, letting out a long, contented breath. "And Diane?"
"Arraigned yesterday," Michael answered, his tone flat. "Her defense team tried to claim diminished capacity, but with Marcus’s forensic audit and the hospital tampering records, the judge denied bail. She’s looking at a minimum of twenty years behind bars."
A shiver of bittersweet closure ran down my spine. It was a tragic end for a woman who had allowed greed and narcissism to poison her soul, but it was the only way our family could survive.
"We won, Michael," I whispered.

"No," Michael corrected me, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head as we watched our daughter laugh in the grass. "We survived. And from here on out, our story belongs entirely to us."
