Chapter 3 - The Cold Reality Behind the Blue Nursery**

The words hung in the sterile air of the delivery room like a toxic fog, suffocating the joy of the moment. My mind raced, unable to process the sheer insanity of what my husband had just muttered.

“What... what did you say?” I whispered, my voice cracking as I pulled the baby closer to my chest, instinctively shielding him with my weak arms.

Aaron’s face was completely drained of color, his eyes darting frantically toward the door to ensure the medical staff hadn't heard him. He forced a stiff, twitching smile for the benefit of the nurse who was now walking back over with a clipboard.

“Nothing, sweetheart,” Aaron said too loudly, his voice unnaturally high. “I’m just... I’m just so overwhelmed with emotion. My son. Wow.”

During the next two days in the hospital recovery ward, Aaron acted like a stranger wearing a crude mask of fatherly pride. He posed for photos with the baby, uploaded glowing announcements to his social media accounts about finally continuing the family name, and accepted congratulatory phone calls with theatrical enthusiasm. But the moment the door clicked shut and we were alone in the dim room, the mask vanished instantly.

He refused to hold the baby. Whenever I asked him to pass me a diaper or rock the crib, he would find an excuse to leave the room, muttering about work emails or coffee runs.

On the third night, while the hospital was quiet and the city lights flickered through the window, I confronted him. I sat upright in the hospital bed, holding our sleeping son against my chest, staring holes through Aaron as he sat rigidly in the armchair across the room.

“You’re going to tell me right now what you meant in that delivery room,” I demanded, my voice low, dangerous, and devoid of fear. “You begged for a son for eight years. You tore our family apart chasing this boy. And the second he arrives, you tell me we need to get rid of him? What is wrong with you, Aaron?”

Aaron flinched, burying his face in his hands. When he finally looked up, the arrogant, overbearing patriarch was gone, replaced by a cornered, terrified coward.

“You don't understand,” he choked out, his voice breaking.

“Then make me understand!” I hissed, careful not to wake the baby.

Aaron stood up, pacing the small linoleum floor like a caged animal. He confessed a secret so dark, so mathematically impossible, and so deeply criminal that it instantly shattered every foundation of our marriage.

“I didn't want a son to carry on my name, Clara,” Aaron whispered, tears finally spilling over his lashes. “I wanted a son because... because six years ago, before we had Harper, I had an affair with a woman in my consulting firm. She got pregnant. She had a boy. And two months ago, she tracked me down.”

The room seemed to tilt sideways. My breath caught in my throat, choking off any sound.

“She’s threatening to expose me to you, to my family, and to my corporate board unless I pay her half a million dollars in hush money,” Aaron continued, his voice trembling violently. “She told me... she told me she wants me to take her son and raise him as my own legitimate child, passing him off as our newborn, or she ruins my entire life.”

I stared at the man I had shared a bed with for eight years, realizing I didn't know him at all.
