Chapter 3 - Adrian’s Panic and the Silent Stare**

The moment Adrian appeared, the entire floor snapped to rigid attention, but Vanessa’s demeanor underwent a miraculous, sickening transformation. Her sharp, aggressive tone melted instantly into a soft, breathy coo as she literally skipped across the carpet to his side, latching her arm possessively around his bicep. “Adrian,” she whimpered softly, pressing close to him. “Thank goodness you’re out. What happened, Vanessa?” Adrian asked, his voice carrying that familiar professional authority, though his brow furrowed with immediate concern. She pointed a manicured finger directly at me, wearing the expression of a pious martyr. “Nothing serious, darling—I mean, Mr. President. Just some new intern who refuses to follow basic office rules and tried to force her way into the executive suite.” Adrian followed the trajectory of her finger, lifting his eyes to look at me. The moment his gaze locked onto my face, the color drained completely from his complexion. He stopped dead in his tracks, his briefcase slipping slightly in his grip. The confident, commanding division president suddenly looked like a man who had just stared into the barrel of a loaded gun. Vanessa, completely blind to the silent catastrophe unfolding right in front of her, leaned closer to his shoulder, continuing her petty complaint. “She has no respect for authority, Adrian. You should security-escort her out of the building immediately.” More than a dozen employees stood frozen around the desks, holding their breath, waiting for the powerful division head to dress down the insolent newcomer who had dared cross his favorite secretary. But Adrian didn't yell. He didn't defend Vanessa. His mouth opened and closed silently, his eyes darting frantically from my calm, unblinking gaze down to the white ceramic watch resting mockingly on Vanessa’s wrist, and then back to my face. He knew. In that terrifying fraction of a second, the crushing realization hit him like a physical blow: the arrogant secretary he had pampered and empowered had just insulted, threatened, and physically blocked his own wife—who happened to be the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the entire parent corporation. The silence on the sixty-eighth floor became so absolute you could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning vents overhead.
