Chapter 2 - The Vandalized Sedan and the Hidden Recorder**

Two days of absolute silence passed. Liam’s phone calls and text messages—alternating between defensive excuses and desperate demands for her to return—remained entirely unanswered. Nora spent those forty-eight hours meeting quietly with her attorney, Marcus Vance, finalizing paperwork that had been drafted long before Florence ever unpacked her suitcases in the living room.
On the third afternoon, Nora decided to return to the apartment complex parking lot to retrieve some vital project blueprints and professional equipment from the trunk of her sedan. As she turned her car into the assigned parking slot behind the building, her heart skipped a beat.
Her pristine white sedan was unrecognizable. Both driver-side doors were deeply gouged with what looked like a heavy masonry chisel, the side mirror hung limply by a frayed wire, and across the windshield, someone had scrawled the words GET OUT in thick, indelible black paint. Standing right beside the driver's side door, holding a heavy garden trowel with flecks of white paint drying on the metal edge, was Florence.
Nora slammed her car door shut, leaving her engine running, and marched across the asphalt. “What on earth have you done to my car?” she yelled, her voice echoing off the concrete walls of the parking garage.
Florence turned around slowly, showing no shock or guilt whatsoever. Instead, she stepped closer, leaning against the dented hood of the vehicle with a sickeningly smug grin.
“Oh, look who’s back,” Florence sneered, crossing her arms. “I told you that you didn't belong here, Nora. This is what happens when you’re disrespectful to your elders. I tried to back my car out of the adjacent spot, and your cheap vehicle just seemed to get in my way. Tragic accident, really.”
Nora looked past Florence and spotted a security camera mounted directly above the adjacent stairwell, its red LED light blinking steadily in the afternoon light. She pulled her smartphone from her pocket with steady, deliberate movements, hit record, and stepped closer.
“So you’re admitting that you deliberately vandalized my vehicle?” Nora asked, keeping her tone dangerously calm.
Florence laughed, a harsh, grating sound that bounced off the brick walls. “Vandalized? Prove it! Who do you think the police are going to believe—a sweet, elderly mother, or an hysterical, ungrateful daughter-in-law trying to tear a family apart? Let’s see who’s going to believe you, Nora. Go ahead, call the cops! My son will back me up, and you’ll look like a lunatic.”
Nora didn't argue. She didn't scream or throw a tantrum. She simply stared at Florence with a gaze so chillingly detached that the older woman’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second.
“Thank you for that confirmation, Florence,” Nora said quietly.
She tapped her screen to stop the recording, backed up the file to her encrypted cloud storage in real time, and immediately dialed her lawyer’s direct line.
“Marcus,” Nora said clearly as Florence watched, her confidence beginning to crack slightly at the edges. “She just did it. I have it all on video, complete with a full verbal confession. Let’s initiate phase two.”

Florence scoffed, attempting to recover her bravado. “Call all the lawyers you want, girl. You can't touch us.” But as Nora walked away toward her friend’s car without looking back, a cold spike of unease pierced Florence’s chest. She had assumed she was only destroying a car. She had no idea what was waiting for her at the finish line.
