Chapter 3 - The Eviction Notice and the Corporate Fallout**

By noon that same day, the illusion of Gene’s untouchable dynasty had completely evaporated. Federal marshals and local bailiffs arrived at the suburban estate with official eviction notices and asset seizure warrants. It turned out that Gene’s control over the family fortune wasn't just tied to the home we were standing in; her entire lifestyle—her luxury cars, her overseas investments, and her lavish social club memberships—depended entirely on the multi-million-dollar trust fund that Brandon now legally managed as Holly’s proxy. As officers taped red seizure notices across the grand mahogany doors and carried boxes of financial ledgers out to the driveway, Gene stood on the front lawn in her designer winter coat, screaming obscenities at the neighbors who had gathered to watch the spectacle. She tried calling her high-powered attorney, only to be informed that her legal counsel had already reviewed the trust documents and confirmed they were ironclad, leaving her with zero legal recourse to fight the eviction.

Brandon, Holly, and I sat inside our vehicle parked across the street, watching the empire of psychological terror crumble into dust. Holly rested her head against the passenger headrest, holding her little red velvet box tightly in her lap. She looked over at Brandon and asked softly, “Does this mean she won’t be at our house anymore?” Brandon reached over, gently patting her dark hair with a tender smile. “It means, sweetie, that no one will ever make you feel like a visitor in your own family again.” The corporate fallout hit the extended family like a cluster bomb within hours. Relatives who had spent years kissing Gene’s feet and participating in her cruel favoritism suddenly realized they were financially dependent on a woman who was now effectively bankrupt and homeless. Phones began ringing off the hook as cousins, aunts, and uncles frantically dialed Brandon and me, begging for financial help, pleading for forgiveness, and claiming they had always loved Holly.

I watched my phone screen light up with desperate text messages from people who wouldn't even make eye contact with my daughter yesterday. I didn't answer a single one of them. For three years, they had watched Gene treat Holly like a stray dog, laughing along with her snide remarks and accepting gifts bought with money that rightfully belonged to my daughter’s future. They had chosen their side of the table, and now they had to live with the consequences of their cowardice. Brandon blocked every single family member’s number in one swift motion, turning off his phone and tossing it into the center console. He looked at me, a profound sense of peace washing over his features for the first time since we had married. “We’re done playing their games,” he said quietly, putting the car in drive. We pulled away from the curb, leaving the weeping tyrant and her flying monkeys behind in the snow, driving toward a future where Holly would never again have to wonder if she belonged.
