Chapter 2 - The Panic of a Queen Without a Crown**

That evening, as I was standing over my kitchen counter chopping fresh vegetables for a quiet dinner alone, my cell phone suddenly began vibrating furiously against the granite surface.
The caller ID flashed a name I hadn't expected to see on my screen for at least a month: Grant Bellamy.
I stared at the glowing letters for a long moment, debating whether to ignore it. But a cold, sharp spike of curiosity won out. I swiped the screen and brought the phone to my ear.
Before I could even utter a single syllable, Grant’s voice erupted through the speaker, high-pitched, frantic, and entirely stripped of its corporate polish.
“What the hell have you done?!”
I walked slowly over to the floor-to-ceiling windows of my condominium, looking out at the dazzling grid of city lights spreading across downtown Denver. My voice remained steady as glass.
“Good evening to you too, Grant. You’ll need to be significantly more specific.”
“Don't play games with me, Maren!” he roared, the sound of heavy traffic in the background suggesting he was sitting inside his luxury sedan. “You just blocked my mother’s corporate credit card! She is currently standing inside Cartier at Cherry Creek Mall trying to pay for a forty-thousand-dollar anniversary necklace for the charity gala, and the terminal just declined her card! The manager is staring at her like she’s a common criminal! Do you have any idea how humiliating this is for our family?!”
A cold, dark satisfaction bloomed in my chest.
“It was my personal account, Grant,” I replied calmly, taking a slow sip of water. “And since we are no longer married, your mother no longer qualifies as an authorized user on my income. Tell her to use her own money.”
“Her money is tied up in liquidating real estate assets right now!” he shouted back, his voice cracking with rising panic. “You don't understand the catastrophe you’ve just triggered! You need to call the bank right this second, override the security block, and clear the transaction! If Lucinda doesn't secure that necklace tonight, her entire fundraising board will start asking uncomfortable questions about her liquidity!”
“Then maybe,” I said, letting each word land with absolute precision, “she should have taught her son how to speak to his wife with respect instead of treating her like an ATM. Call her another Uber, Grant. The party is over.”
Before he could scream another threat, I tapped the red end-call button and blocked his number entirely.
I dropped the phone back onto the counter, feeling an intoxicating rush of freedom. For years, I had walked on eggshells, terrified of upsetting the delicate, fragile glass house the Bellamys had constructed around themselves. Now that I had finally shattered it, I realized how weak their foundation truly was.
Or so I thought.
What I didn't realize was that Lucinda Bellamy’s "charity" wasn't just a high-society vanity project. It was a massive, multi-million-dollar financial house of cards—and my personal credit card accounts, tax filings, and vendor invoices had accidentally become the quiet digital vault holding every single receipt of their systemic fraud.
An hour later, the sun dipped completely below the horizon, plunging the city into darkness. The wind howled against the reinforced glass of my balcony doors, carrying the chill of the coming storm. I curled up on my sofa with a cup of chamomile tea and my laptop open on my knees, sorting through old digital folders to back up my independent business files before migrating them to a secure cloud server.
That was when I noticed a strange anomaly in the root directory of my hard drive.
A hidden, encrypted folder labeled Bellamy_Charity_Audits_2024 was sitting right there in my personal backup directory—a folder I had never created, never authorized, and certainly never placed on my machine.

With a hesitant click, I opened it.
What I saw inside made the tea turn to ice in my stomach.
