Chapter 3 - The Broken Gates

Down in the security hub near the perimeter wall, the primary monitor bank flickered violently before exploding into a shower of white-hot sparks.

The backup generator didn't fail; it was systematically bypassed.

Michael stood frozen in the center of the foyer, the heavy iron poker trembling slightly in his grip. The child’s words echoed in his ears like a death sentence. Uncle Dante. He had believed Dante Moretti was three thousand miles away in Palermo, tied down by an international shipping conglomerate and a syndicate war that spanned three continents.

Yet, the ground beneath the mansion was vibrating now. The rhythmic, low-frequency thrum of heavy-duty diesel engines echoed up the private driveway, punctuated by the crunch of gravel as two matte-black SUVs cut through the estate’s manicured boxwood hedges without slowing down for the turns.

“Impossible,” Michael muttered, his chest heaving as panic clawed at his throat. “I verified his flight schedules. He’s in Italy.”

Elena, still hiding in the shadows of the service hallway, watched through a gap in the wood-paneled walls. She saw the fear wash over Michael’s face—the sudden, shivering realization that his carefully constructed empire of violence was about to be crushed into dust.

*Clang.*

The heavy oak-and-iron front doors of the mansion didn't open with a polite knock. A single, catastrophic kick from the outside blew the reinforced deadbolts clean out of the masonry frames. The massive doors slammed backward against the interior walls with a deafening crash, showering the foyer in splinters.

A figure stepped through the smoking threshold.

Dante Moretti didn't run. He walked with the unhurried, predatory grace of a wolf entering a pen of sheep. He wore a dark wool overcoat thrown loosely over his shoulders, his shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal thick, corded forearms bearing the faint, jagged scars of old knife wounds. Behind him, four towering men in tactical gear fanned out into the corners of the room, their weapons lowered with professional, terrifying precision.

Dante stopped ten feet inside the foyer.

His dark eyes swept the room in a single, icy glance. They skipped over the shattered glass. They skipped over Michael’s frozen form. They locked instantly onto Victoria’s motionless body in the silver dress—and then down to little Mia, who was still kneeling beside her mother.

Dante’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. When he spoke, his voice wasn't loud, but it carried the crushing weight of an avalanche.

“Michael,” Dante said softly. “Drop the iron.”
