Chapter 8 - The Family Dinner

One month after the turnover of the estate, the dining room looked entirely different. The dark, suffocating velvet drapes had been replaced with crisp white linen curtains that let the golden afternoon light flood across the polished hardwood floor. The chocolate frosting stain was long gone, replaced by a clean, smooth finish.
Avice sat at the head of the table—not on the floor, not pushed away, but in a sturdy booster seat right beside mine, happily coloring in a new drawing book.
The front doorbell chimed.
I walked to the entryway and opened the door. Julian stood on the porch, wearing a simple button-down shirt and slacks, holding a box of fresh pastries from a bakery down the street.
“Am I early?” Julian asked, offering a hesitant, self-conscious smile.
“Right on time,” I said, stepping aside and clapping a hand onto his shoulder. “Come on in.”
Behind Julian, walking slowly up the stone pathway, was Margaret. She carried a small, modest glass bowl filled with fresh strawberries from the garden she had started behind the garage apartment. She looked different—less like an empress guarding a ruined throne, and more like a grandmother visiting her family.
Avice looked up from her coloring book as Margaret stepped into the foyer. For a second, the little girl froze, remembering the night her birthday card was thrown away and her chair was violently yanked backward.
Margaret stopped near the doorway, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched the glass bowl. She didn't force her way forward. She simply knelt down to Avice’s eye level, keeping a respectful distance.
“Hello, Avice,” Margaret said softly, her voice devoid of its usual frost. “I brought some strawberries. If... if you want them, they’re right here.”
Avice stared at her for a long, quiet moment. Then, slowly, she laid down her crayon, stood up, and walked over to the old woman. She looked at the strawberries, then up at Margaret’s face.
“Thank you, Grandma,” Avice whispered.

Margaret’s eyes welled up with sudden, genuine tears. She pulled Avice into a gentle, careful hug, resting her chin on the little girl’s dark curls.
