Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of the Heir

“Mother,” Marcus began, his voice cracking slightly as he took a hurried step forward, trying to insert himself back into the center of control. “Mother, thank goodness you’re here. There’s been a bit of a… a misunderstanding. Clara has been under a lot of stress lately, and she came down here uninvited, and things got a bit chaotic—”

Eleanor did not even turn her head to look at him. She raised a single, perfectly manicured hand.

“Shut your mouth, Marcus,” Eleanor commanded, her tone dropping into an icy register that froze the air in the lobby.

Marcus clamped his jaw shut, color draining entirely from his cheeks.

Eleanor turned her complete attention back to me, her eyes softening with a deep, fierce protectiveness that I had rarely seen from her before. Though Eleanor had always been a demanding, high-standard businesswoman, she had fiercely defended our family bond ever since we announced the pregnancy.

“Clara, my child,” Eleanor said softly, her voice steady. “Tell me exactly what happened here. And do not leave out a single detail.”

With my voice shaking and tears finally spilling over my lashes, I told her everything. I told her how Marcus had used her name to trick me into coming to the hotel under the guise of a family trust meeting. I told her how I walked into the lobby only to find Marcus standing intimately with Vivian. And, with a trembling finger pointing directly at the woman standing beside my husband, I whispered, “She hit me. And Marcus told me to get an Uber and go home because I was making a scene.”

The lobby grew so quiet you could hear the blood rushing in my ears.

Vivian, realizing her glamorous facade was rapidly cracking under the weight of the matriarch’s stare, decided to step in with a defensive, oily smile.

“Mrs. Hale, please, you have to understand,” Vivian chimed in, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. “Marcus is under immense pressure building his empire. Clara was holding him back, clinging to the past. He deserves a partner who matches his status, someone who can navigate high society, not someone who throws tantrums in hotel lobbies. Marcus and I are planning a future together, and—”

“Who are you?” Eleanor interrupted, her voice dangerously calm as she finally turned her gaze toward Vivian.

Vivian blinked, taken aback by the blunt dismissal. “I—I’m Vivian Cross. I’m Marcus’s senior business consultant and his—”

“You are a trespasser,” Eleanor stated flatly, cutting her off mid-sentence. She looked Vivian up and down with undisguised contempt, as if inspecting a stain on an expensive rug. “And an assault liability. Security.”

Before Vivian or Marcus could react, two heavy-set corporate security guards stationed near the hotel entrance briskly stepped forward, their radios crackling.

“Escort this woman off the property immediately,” Eleanor instructed the guards, pointing a finger at Vivian. “If she attempts to step foot within five hundred yards of any Hale or Moretti enterprise, call the local precinct and have her booked for trespassing and disorderly conduct.”

“What?!” Vivian shrieked, her voice losing all its polished sweetness, turning shrill as the two guards grabbed her designer arms. “Marcus! Tell your mother! You can't let them do this to me! You said I was going to be the mistress of this family!”

Marcus panicked, lunging forward to intervene. “Mother, stop! What are you doing? Vivian is essential to the new commercial development contracts! You can’t just throw her out!”

“I can do whatever I damn well please with my company, my trust, and my son,” Eleanor snapped back, her eyes flashing with pure fire. She turned her fierce gaze back to Marcus. “And as for you, you miserable, spineless disappointment of a man… you have spent the last six months orchestrating a pathetic little game behind my back, haven’t you?”

Marcus recoiled as if he had been struck physically. “What are you talking about?”

Eleanor reached down, opened the thick leather-bound portfolio she had been carrying under her arm, and pulled out a stack of crisp, legal documents. She didn't hand them to Marcus. She dropped them in a messy pile right at his polished leather shoes.

“I’m talking about the corporate embezzlement, the falsified subsidiary ledgers, and the secret asset-stripping you’ve been doing through shell companies registered under Vivian Cross’s name,” Eleanor said, her voice echoing coldly through the marble hall.

Marcus stared down at the papers, his breath catching in his throat, his face turning a sickly shade of gray.

“You… you audited my accounts?” he whispered, horror dawning in his eyes.

“I didn’t just audit your accounts, Marcus,” Eleanor replied, her lips curling into a ruthless, triumphant smile. “I own eighty-five percent of the voting shares in your company. You thought you were building an independent empire? Every brick you laid was built on capital I loaned you, backed by trust funds carrying my signature.”

Eleanor stepped right up to her trembling son, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper.

“You wanted a divorce from my daughter-in-law? Fine. But you won't be walking away with a single penny of my family's wealth. Starting tomorrow morning, you are stripped of your title, removed from the board of directors, and sued for corporate fraud. You are completely, utterly broke.”
