Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm at St. Jude’s Cathedral

Seventy-two hours vanished in a blur of calculated silence and subterranean warfare.

Outwardly, Marello Vitali played his part to absolute perfection. He maintained every scheduled meeting with Viktor Moretti, smiled politely during final wedding fittings, and acted as the oblivious, powerful groom walking blindly toward the altar. Behind the scenes, however, his elite hit squads and loyal lieutenants had systematically surrounded St. Jude’s Cathedral, cutting off every escape route, replacing the cathedral’s internal security detail with veteran mercenaries, and rigging the perimeter with encrypted signal scramblers to block any outside communications.

Leo was safely hidden in an impregnable safehouse deep beneath the North Side docks, guarded by Marcus, Marello’s most trusted commander, along with a team of twenty armed men.

Elena spent those three days in the shadows of Marello’s private study, reviewing financial ledgers, tracking offshore accounts, and mapping out the web of corruption that connected Viktor Moretti to three high-ranking members of Marello’s own executive board. The betrayal ran deeper than they had initially thought; it was a total corporate and syndicate coup disguised as a marriage of convenience.

On the morning of the wedding, the sky over Chicago was a heavy, oppressive blanket of gray fog.

Inside the bridal suite of the grand hotel adjacent to St. Jude’s Cathedral, Bianca Moretti stood before a tall gilded mirror, adjusting the intricate lace veil of her designer silk wedding gown. Her reflection was breathtaking—flawless makeup, diamond earrings sparkling under the chandelier, and an expression of supreme, unshakeable triumph.

In less than two hours, she would walk down the aisle, slip a micro-encapsulated toxin ring into Marello’s champagne glass during the private altar toast, and watch the most feared kingpin in the city die gasping for air on holy ground. With Marello dead and her father controlling the syndicate board, the entire Vitali empire would fall into their hands without a single shot being fired.

A soft knock echoed at the heavy oak door of the suite.

“Come in,” Bianca said smoothly, not turning away from her reflection.

The door clicked open, and Viktor Moretti stepped into the room, flanked by two armed bodyguards in custom tuxedos. His face was grave, lined with the nervous tension of a general preparing for the final, decisive battle.

“Is everything in place, Viktor?” Bianca asked, applying a final touch of crimson lipstick. “Has the security detail at the cathedral been fully neutralized?”

“Every man on our payroll is stationed at their designated checkpoints,” Viktor replied, walking over to the window and looking down at the heavy black limousines idling in the street below. “Once Marello drinks the chalice, the syndicate council will immediately ratify the merger. By nightfall, we own Chicago.”

Bianca turned around, a sharp, cruel smile playing across her lips. “He always thought he was untouchable. He spent seven years mourning a ghost, completely blind to the fact that his real enemies were sharing his bed.”

She picked up her crystal bouquet holder, her eyes gleaming with dark ambition. “Let’s go marry a dead man.”

Little did she know, the dead man was already waiting for her at the altar. And he had brought an army.
