Chapter 5 - The Wedding Vows We Never Broke

The evening rain tapped softly against the tall, arched windows of Sebastian’s penthouse office. The city skyline outside glittered like a sea of diamonds, washed clean by the storm.

The crisis had evaporated faster than it began. Within two hours of Cole’s arrest, the federal judge who signed the fraudulent emergency injunction had recused himself in sheer terror, the municipal redevelopment coalition had dissolved under public scandal, and the emergency protection deed for St. Jude’s Hospice was permanently reinstated with lifetime federal immunity.

Sebastian stood by the window, swirling a glass of amber whiskey in his hand, staring out at the rain. The door behind him clicked open with a soft, familiar sound.

Audrey stepped into the room. She had changed out of her simple cardigan into a dark emerald silk dress, her hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. She looked tired, but the heavy weight of exhaustion that had haunted her eyes for fourteen months was finally gone.

"The hospice lawyers just called," Audrey said quietly, stopping a few feet away from him. "The city officially dropped all claims. St. Jude’s is safe. Permanently."

Sebastian turned slowly, setting his glass down on the mahogany desk. He looked at her—really looked at her—without the blinders of grief, vengeance, or suspicion. He saw the fierce protector, the loyal friend, and the woman who had honored a dead girl's promise even when it meant enduring his harshest wrath.

"I had my men clear out Mayor Vance's entire development board," Sebastian said evenly. "They will never bother St. Jude’s—or you—ever again."

Audrey looked down at her hands, hesitating for a moment before speaking. "You didn't have to do all of that, Sebastian. The marriage... was supposed to be just a business transaction. Revenge."

Sebastian crossed the room, his footsteps quiet against the Persian rug. He stopped just inches away from her, his tall frame shielding her from the cold world outside. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the platinum wedding band she had left on the dresser two nights ago.

"When you walked out of that hotel suite, you asked me what kind of man I was when nobody gave me the missing piece," Sebastian said, his voice unusually soft, stripped of all mafia bravado. "I realized something. For fourteen months, I thought I was looking for someone to blame for Catherine's death. But all this time, I was just looking for someone who loved her as much as I did."

Audrey looked up, her breath catching in her throat as Sebastian gently took her right hand. With slow, deliberate care, he slid the platinum band back onto her ring finger where it belonged. It fit with absolute, undeniable perfection.

"The marriage was built on revenge," Sebastian whispered, his dark eyes burning with a fierce, quiet devotion. "But I intend to spend the rest of my life making sure the vows we spoke are the only real thing left in my world."

Audrey let out a trembling, emotional breath, a soft smile finally breaking through her stoic exterior as she reached up and rested her hand against his cheek. The storm outside raged on, but inside the penthouse, the war was finally over.
