Chapter 4 - The Confession Under the Chandelier

The echoing silence that followed the violence in the study was broken only by the sound of heavy footsteps rushing down the corridor. Within seconds, Sylvio and a dozen loyal security operatives flooded the room, guns drawn, securing the perimeter and neutralizing Victor’s remaining co-conspirators before they could even draw their weapons.
Cassius sat in his wheelchair, his chest heaving slightly beneath his vest, his dark eyes locked entirely on Marin. She stood trembling amidst the scattered books and broken glass, her apron stained with dust, her hands raw and bleeding from the struggle.
"Are you insane?" Cassius demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of fury and disbelief as he wheeled himself forward. "I told you to stay away from the west wing! He could have killed you!"
"And you could have let him shoot you while you sat there playing chess with a corpse," Marin shot back, her voice shaking with adrenaline and long-suppressed exhaustion. For the first time in her life, she didn't bow her head. She looked him dead in the eye. "I didn't survive Mrs. Prescott's cruelty and the cold streets of Chicago to stand by and watch someone murder the only man in this city who actually tasted my food instead of judging my apron!"
A stunned silence fell over the room. Sylvio and the guards stared at the housekeeper in absolute shock, waiting for the master of the house to erupt in lethal anger.
Instead, Cassius Vain looked at her for a long, searching moment—and then, slowly, a deep, resonant laugh rumbled from his chest. It was the first time in over two years that genuine laughter had echoed within the stone walls of the mansion.

"You really don't know when to keep your head down, do you, Miss Holloway?" Cassius murmured, reaching out to gently take her bleeding, flour-dusted hand in his large, warm palm. He pulled a pristine silk handkerchief from his pocket and tenderly wiped a smudge of soot from her cheek. "Victor thought he owned this house. He forgot that the foundation was built by people who know the value of honest labor."
He looked up at Sylvio. "Lock him in the lower vault. Notify the federal prosecutors that we have a complete confession recorded on the security servers. And get Miss Holloway a medic—and a fresh apron."
