Chapter 5 - The Reunion and the Vow of the Lion

Within minutes, the gallery was entirely secured by Alessandro’s loyal men. The wounded Victor was hauled away into the rain by two enforcers, his syndicate career permanently dismantled, his life hanging by a thread.

Camille stood frozen in the center of the quiet, empty gallery, her chest heaving as she stared at Alessandro.

"Is she... is she okay?" Camille cried out, the maternal panic finally breaking through her shock. "Where is Sophie? What did you do with her?"

Alessandro didn't answer with words. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, and tapped the video call icon.

He held the screen out toward her.

On the bright display, sitting comfortably on a plush velvet sofa inside the West Village brownstone, was Sophie. She was eating a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream, swinging her legs happily while Dr. Moretti stood nearby making sure she was comfortable.

"Hi, Mommy!" Sophie chirped brightly into the camera. "A man named Alessandro brought me to a really big house with lots of books! He gave me ice cream!"

Camille snatched the phone from Alessandro’s hand, pressing it against her face, sobbing tears of pure, overwhelming relief. "Oh, my baby! My sweet baby! Are you alright? Did anyone hurt you?"

"No, Mommy! Alessandro protected me the whole way on the big silver airplane!"

Camille slowly lowered the phone, her hands shaking violently. She looked up at Alessandro, her gray-blue eyes—mirrored precisely in the child on the screen—shining with a complex mix of fear, gratitude, and undeniable love.

"You knew," Camille whispered. "From the moment you saw her on that flight."

"I knew within three seconds," Alessandro confirmed softly, closing the distance between them until he stood close enough for her to feel the warmth radiating from his chest. He reached up, his large, calloused hand gently wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "You tried to hide my blood from me, Camille. You tried to keep my world away from her."

"I had to," she pleaded, her voice breaking. "I couldn't let her grow up surrounded by blood and enemies."

"She won't be," Alessandro promised, his voice dropping into an absolute, unshakeable vow that echoed off the gallery walls. "The men who threatened her are gone. Victor is finished. From this moment on, no one in this city—no one in this world—will ever dare to look at my daughter or her mother with anything less than absolute reverence."

Camille stared into his dark, fierce eyes, seeing not just the ruthless mafia boss that terrified New York, but the father who had unknowingly protected his flesh and blood thousands of feet up in the sky.

Slowly, hesitantly, she leaned forward, resting her forehead against his shoulder. Alessandro wrapped his arms around her, pulling both her and the memory of those lonely years into a fierce, unbreakable embrace.

An hour later, the black Maybach pulled up to the iron gates of the West Village brownstone.

When the front doors opened, Sophie came running down the grand mahogany hallway as fast as her small legs could carry her, flying straight into her mother’s outstretched arms.

Alessandro stood by the doorway, watching them laugh and cry together under the warm golden light of the chandelier. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the red sketchbook Sophie had left on the airplane, and traced the worn edges of the photograph taped inside the cover.

The storm outside was still raging, hammering against the reinforced glass windows of the estate. But inside, the fortress was finally complete.
