Chapter 2 - The Ringing Phone and the Breaking Point

The sound of Greg’s ringtone felt like an alarm bell shattering a fragile glass dome. Down in the foyer, the phone continued to buzz against the polished marble, its electronic chime bouncing off the high ceilings and looping back around us like a mocking question.

Leo didn't look down at the phone. His eyes remained fixed on mine, dark, burning, and entirely unyielding. But his jaw clenched, a muscle jumping violently at the edge of his stubbled cheek.

"Answer it," Leo challenged quietly. "Tell him you're staying home. Tell him the ghost decided she didn't want to play human tonight."

"No," I whispered, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps. I could feel the heat radiating from his body, melting away my resolve. The burgundy slip dress felt suddenly too thin, exposing too much skin, making me hyper-aware of every place his hands had touched. "I won't let you dictate my life, Leo. My father’s care is paid through next month. I can walk out that door right now, quit this job, and never look back."

"Try it," Leo replied instantly, his voice a lethal whisper. "Walk out those doors. Step past the gates. See how long your father’s private care facility honors your payment before an anonymous donation from a Santoro shell corporation suddenly bounces, and he's transferred to a state-run hospital where they don't even change the sheets. You think you can escape my orbit, Tessa? You've been breathing my air for twelve months. You're woven into the very fabric of this house."

The words hit me like a physical blow. My breath caught in my throat, choking off any reply. The threat wasn't loud or theatrical; it was delivered with the terrifying certainty of a man who owned the city blocks we walked on. He didn't need to lock me in a dungeon; he had built a cage out of my own desperate love for my father.

"You're a monster," I whispered, a single tear breaking free and tracing a hot path down my cheek, cutting through the dark red lipstick.

The moment the tear touched my skin, Leo’s demeanor shifted again. The predatory predator vanished, replaced by an unsettling, raw vulnerability. His hand moved from my waist, his warm fingertips gently catching the tear before it could fall onto the silk of my dress.

"Maybe I am," Leo murmured, his thumb stroking my cheekbone with a tenderness that terrified me far more than his anger. "But I'm the only monster standing between you and the real wolves out there. Greg is safe, Tessa. He’s too safe. He’d let you walk into a burning building because he’d be too polite to interrupt the fire department. I burn the building down before I let anyone lay a finger on you."

He stepped back, releasing my waist, though he didn't move away from the door. He picked up my handbag from the floor, dusted off the clasp with his palm, and held it out to me.

"The car is idling in the circular drive," Leo said, his voice returning to its cool, controlled authority. "My head of security, Marcus, is waiting by the passenger door. He will drive you to the restaurant. He will sit at a table three feet away from you and Greg the entire evening. He will watch every word, ensure no one looks at you twice, and drive you safely back to your quarters by 10:00 PM sharp."

May you like

I stared at the handbag in his hand, my chest heaving. "That’s not a date, Leo. That’s a hostage situation."

"That’s a compromise," Leo corrected smoothly, his eyes flashing with dark amusement. "Take it or stay here and let me show you what happens when I truly lose my patience."
