Chapter 5 - Sanctuary and the Storm**

Sophia did not wait for Dante to debate whether he believed her.

She crossed the conference room floor with brisk, silent steps, hit the master electronic security panel on the wall, and locked the heavy glass doors with a sharp, echoing digital click.

Outside, the west corridor glowed under sterile ceiling lights. Somewhere deep within the walls, an elevator chime rang out a single, muted tone.

Dante pulled out his encrypted mobile phone, his thumb flying across the screen. He pressed the intercom button, but static answered first, followed immediately by the frantic, broken voice of his head of security.

“Boss! Stay in the conference room! We have a multi-point security breach on thirty-six—!”

The radio cut out with a sharp screech of feedback.

Dante looked back at Sophia, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and sudden realization. “Your five visitors?”

“Likely.”

“You said likely?” Dante demanded, his voice rising.

“I counted five entering the main lobby reception,” Sophia replied coolly, reaching down to unbuckle the strap of her left high heel. “I didn't say they were stupid enough to come alone.”

She kicked off her heels, leaving them placed neatly side-by-side beneath the edge of the conference table.

Dante stared down at her bare feet, completely bewildered. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Making less noise,” she said simply.

Before Dante could speak another word, the heavy wooden panels of the private executive exit blew inward in a shower of splintered mahogany and flying metal screws.

Three armed men in black tactical gear poured through the doorway, assault rifles raised, their faces covered by reinforced balaclavas.

Dante instinctively reached for the concealed sidearm beneath his suit jacket, but before his fingers could even clear the leather holster, the lead intruder swung his rifle barrel directly toward his chest.

*Crack!*

It wasn't a gunshot. It was the sound of absolute, devastating physics.

Sophia moved with a terrifying speed that defied every human expectation. She didn't run away; she closed the distance between herself and the first intruder in half a second. Using the heavy wooden edge of the conference table as a fulcrum, she launched herself upward, her right heel snapping forward with brutal precision directly into the gunman’s wrist.

The assault rifle discharged harmlessly into the ceiling plaster as the weapon flew from the man’s shattered grip.

Before the second gunman could pivot his weapon toward her, Sophia spun mid-air, her elbow slamming viciously into his temple with the crushing force of a steel piston. The man collapsed like a dead weight onto the marble floor, completely unconscious.

The third intruder froze, his eyes widening in pure terror as he scrambled to aim his pistol at the small, slender woman standing before him.

Sophia didn't hesitate. She swept her leg across the floor in a low, lightning-fast arc, kicking the man’s boots out from under him. As he crashed backward, she drove her palm upward into his chin with enough force to snap his head back against the wall, dropping him instantly.

Within four seconds, three heavily armed, elite mercenaries were scattered across the floor of the executive conference room without a single gunshot being fired in self-defense.

Silence rushed back into the room, broken only by the sound of plaster dust slowly drifting down from the damaged ceiling.

Dante stood frozen near the head of the table, his hand still hovering over his empty holster, his chest heaving as he stared down at the unconscious men, and then up at Sophia.

She stood calmly over the fallen intruders, straightening the cuffs of her charcoal suit jacket. Not a single hair was out of place. Her breathing was controlled, steady, and quiet.

The heavy glass doors behind them suddenly buzzed as two more armed men tried to force their way in from the corridor, only to find the electronic locks firmly engaged. Through the glass, Dante could see his own security guards finally rallying, tackling the remaining intruders in the hallway and pinning them to the floor.

Dante slowly lowered his hand, turning to look at his secretary with a look of utter disbelief.

“You... you’re not a secretary,” Dante whispered, the words catching in his throat.

Sophia walked back over to the edge of the conference table, calmly sliding her feet back into her black high heels with the exact same precision she used every morning.

“I am your executive secretary, Mr. Romano,” she corrected softly, picking up her leather folder. “Managing your schedule, your security, and your corporate survival happens to be part of the job description.”

Dante let out a long, breathless laugh—not of mockery this time, but of absolute, humbled awe. He looked at the shattered door, then back at the woman who had just dismantled an elite strike team in seconds while wearing a tailored designer suit.

“Remind me,” Dante murmured, a genuine, respectful smile finally touching his lips, “never to schedule you for defensive training again.”

Sophia adjusted her collar, her dark eyes flashing with quiet confidence.

“Your 2:00 meeting with the federal compliance auditors is in four hours, Mr. Romano,” she said, turning toward the door. “Shall I clear your calendar for the rest of the afternoon?”
