Chapter 3 - The Interrogation And The Digital Trap

Within twenty minutes, local police cruisers and an ambulance flooded the motel parking lot, their flashing red and blue lights painting the motel room walls in rhythmic, strobing patterns. Detective Vance, a seasoned investigator with sharp eyes and an unyielding demeanor, stepped into our suite alongside two uniformed officers. He took one look at my bloodied mouth, my scraped forearm, the shattered picture frame, and the incriminating evidence spilled from Brenda’s tote bag, and his expression turned as cold as granite.
Richard handed over the hotel key sleeve, the passports, and the forged cashier's checks, explaining the entire plot with a steady, resolute voice. Detective Vance carefully bagged each item into evidence pouches before turning his attention toward me.
"You took a severe beating protecting this child, sir," Detective Vance noted respectfully, handing me a sterile gauze pad to press against my split lip. "And your quick action preserved forensic evidence that would have otherwise vanished into thin air. We’ve already put out an all-ports alert for Marcus and Brenda. Patrol units intercepted them in the motel parking lot before they could load their rental car. They’re currently sitting in separate interrogation rooms down at the precinct."
"Did they say anything?" Richard asked tensely, leaning against the edge of the laminate table.
"Marcus is crying and blaming his wife, while Brenda is demanding a lawyer and claiming the baby was legally surrendered," Detective Vance replied grimly. "Standard playbook for career grifters. But we recovered Brenda’s smartphone during the arrest. Our cyber-crime unit is unlocking it right now. The text messages and financial wire receipts stored on that device will tie them directly to an international child-trafficking syndicate operating out of Chicago and Detroit. They aren't just looking at domestic abuse charges anymore; they're facing federal kidnapping, conspiracy, and human trafficking indictments that carry decades behind bars."

As the paramedics gently coaxed me into sitting down to disinfect my scraped arm and check my concussion symptoms, I refused to let go of little Toby until a trusted female child-services officer arrived to take him for a precautionary pediatric evaluation. Watching him carried out safely in the arms of a medical professional, wrapped securely in my woolen coat, I finally let out a long, shuddering breath. The nightmare was far from over, but the trap had slammed shut on the conspirators with irreversible force.
Over the next forty-eight hours, the digital evidence pulled from Brenda’s phone blew the case wide open. Federal agents uncovered a network of co-conspirators who had targeted vulnerable newborns across the Midwest, exploiting family connections to infiltrate homes and smuggle infants across state and international borders. Marcus and Brenda’s web of lies was completely incinerated by the cold, undeniable light of federal investigation, leaving them isolated, exposed, and completely powerless.
